Well apparently someone liked my gas cap more than I did so they took it...
It was the keyed gas cap.
I ordered a replacement from pelican, but it didn't fit... after a talk with a service rep with a nasty tone he informed me that you can only buy the keyed type that fits my car directly from a dealer. In Pelicans defense I did reread the fine print and it does state it doesn't fit my car. I need a gas cap for a car manufactured in Nov 1998. Apparently BMW decided to redesign the filler cap 3 times in the Z3s life.
So I have some questions:
1. Can I only buy an OEM keyed replacement from my dealer? Do I even have enough arms and legs to afford the replacement?
2. Can some other gas cap fit the car?

That's using my VIN.
You can probably buy it from a vendor but you'll need to provide proof of ownership (usually the case when getting keys made or locks).
I guess my 12 cabage from autozone will do fine , w/ no key.
You can buy a replacement that works with your key from an online vendor. You can also buy the non-locking version for about 20% of the locked version's cost. Both work fine.
On the roadsters do they offer locking gas doors? On my 91 318is i had the door would lock on this 99 coupe it doesn't. I heard from a friend the roadsters lock. Confirm/Deny?
My coupe door locks, this is news to me if they don't.
The fuel door was added to the central locking system in 4/99, I think.
I had a locking gas cap without locking door. Even though I replaced the seal, it no longer passed the test at the smog station. I bought a non-locking gas cap from ECS Tuning. Works fine.

Our '01 Z3 has a locking gas door, so no locking gas cap.
It failed emissions testing, but the woman was using the wrong pressure cap and she said since it's one of those Germany cars, failing is technically passing in the US.
Whatever..

We retrofit headlights, code BMWs, rekey locks and thoroughly detail cars. Interested or curious? PM us.
I've replaced the gas cap twice now with new ones. Every cap I get fails the test every year.

If you have a locking gas cap I don't understand how someone stole it.
If you don't lock it anyway just get a regular one from BMW.
My wife has a 98 Z3 6 cyl 2.8L and needed a new gas cap. Just ordered one from the BMW Dealer in Nashville, TN. Non-locking is $30.32 ea with a two day delivery. Locking one was also available for $93.17 each with a week delivery. For the locking one they needed to see the registration for the vehicle. They also needed the last seven (7) digits of the VIN number to guarantee an exact replacement. Will post again when I receive the gas cap.
So I just called Tischer and verified the pre 4/99 production Z3 with the manual ocking gas cap part number: 16111184709 is no longer available from the Dealer. Is there any other source for a replacement lockable gas cap???
