Day 5 of S54 engine replacement

Not alot was done today. My goal was to have the new engine and transmission bolted up together and sitting on the table. I'm about a couple of hours from that. I had to work on two other BMWs this morning before I started working on the engine.

I got new flywheel bolts, new intake and exhaust manifold gaskets from the parts dept. this morning.

Started bolting on the exhaust manifold/cats and route the wiring harness for the O2 sensors and EGT to their respective locations.

I forgot to take a picture of the bearing being removed with the special tool. Here's a picture of the BMW special tool thats to be used to press in the bearing.

Flywheel has been cleaned off and is ready to be torqued down. Notice the special tool being used to hold the flywheel in place.

Ok so I had everything ready for the engine to be on the front subframe.. but apprently I wasnt thinking and I noticed I couldnt lift the engine out of the wood crate with the throttle assembly in the way. This has to be removed so the chains wont get caught and break them.

So I removed the fuel rail, harness, and throttle assembly then placed the hooks on the holes.

Covered up the intake ports. You can see the fuel injectors/rail on the upper right hand side.

Close up shot of intake ports/valves.

The new engine had silver color valves and the old one had like a gold color to them.

OT- Jon, I assume you're a BMW tech?

My e46 has about 40k on the clock...My clutch has started to chatter a bit. This really only happens when pulling away from a stop and not giving it quite enough gas. Anything I should worry about?

That looks like a very nice shop! So clean!

    Thanks!

I have the exact same problem at 47,000 miles. It's VERY annoying and I would also like to know if there's anything I can do and if it's covered by the warranty.

    BTW: nice work!

    cbloysM3 and srcstc-

I cant give you an accurate diagnosis of your complaints online if I cant hear the noise. However, this will be my guess but have a professional tech take a look at it.

Your guibo flex disc is going out - (warranty)

Your clutch is starting to go out as well. (I think if you have full maintenance its covered)

If you have a short shifter, you may want to remove it since they can always blame the noise complaint on that. It may also be the cause of th chatter/vibration.

    Awesome Write-ups Jon!

That's a kick ass Torque Wrench, Do I have to graduate to get one?

Any thoughts on the Valves? I know that Ti Valves will have a characteristic Gold Tone to them, any other ideas?
