I got the recall notice on my M3 ages ago and only last week got notice they might have the part so maybe i could actually get the part installed... Another hassle to schedule and deal..

Interesting that the 02-03 E39s are on there as well as the 02-05 E46s which share airbags, but not the 00-01 E46s which use the same airbags.

Maybe the 00-01s were manufactured by someone else, despite being the same shape

    - - - Updated - - -

    Here's the official notice: http://www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/im...5V318-4637.pdf

Seeing the number of E39 tourings effected, I understand why BMW didn't bother bringing the F11 here.

BMW has received no reports of any injures or deaths from this problem in its vehicles

What is... no. I was in an accident in a 2002 540i sportwagon. The airbag didn't deploy, and it should have. BMW NA is aware of this. Guess I will have to dig up the accident report and "remind" them.

And to think I got rid of two perfect running 2000s so I could upgrade to the 03 model year...

Let us know how it goes. I will likely be using the same dealer.

That's not what this recall addresses. This recall is specifically about the Takata airbags that deployed with excessive force and launched metal fragments at the driver and/or passengers' faces. To date, the only cars where that occurred have been Hondas, but since the same basic inflator was used in many cars, the recall covers far more than just Hondas.

I heard notices will go out in July. I fully expect our cars will be on the list - but if I never carry any passengers cause I have no friends and my wife won't get in the Touring, should I care?

Considering it's for the driver's side, I would think so.

Thank you for clarifying. Then again, my Harley doesn't have an airbag and I still ride it

    splinterdasting.

for the existing M3 recall it is passenger side... however I see from this that it seems to add the drivers side... maybe 2 different situations?

They decided to recall the sport driver airbag after Takata admitted its design is flawed, which is why the E39 is included now

Great. Almost missed it, but my production date is 3/27/2002. Only positive is, at least I get a loaner BMW. Just annoying, as I already did this with my E46 less than 6 months ago.

Maybe, but considering that they eventually expanded the E46 recall to include all with the facelifted airbags, I'm a bit surprised they didn't go all out this time around. It'd be interesting to see if Takata made the pre-facelift dual stage airbags too (and if those will be recalled).

You could probably just look at the airbag itself. Mine clearly says "Takata" on the label
