Question How much to torque lug nuts?

What determines how much torque to use on your lug nuts?

I'm getting new wheels and autox'n this year and want to make sure I use the correct force when checking them.

There is a standard guide depending on the size of the bolt. I torque mine no more than 90.

Most BMWs are 88 lb.-ft. Its not a bad idea to recheck them after each run if you auto-x.

FYI - today was taking off wheels to apply wheel wax on my sisters new 328ci. The security bolts were on so tight I almost could not get them off with a 1.5 foot bar. I would estimate I needed 140 ft-lbs to get them off. Some of the other bolts were so loose that it seemed 20 ft-lbs got them off. So I would check any new cars and asm. with some light coating of never sieze and 88 ft-lbs. I guess you can't trust the dealers.

Wheel bolt torque is actually 100 Nm or about 74 ft lbs. Wheel bolts should be clean and free of any type of lubricants including never seize.

Not 74, its 88. BMW changed their spec years ago.

Do your own research on anti-seize. I prefer it.

my tire installer confirmed the 88lb-ft setting when installing my wheels, not that I doubted the knowledgeable people there.

Ditto on the 88ft/lbs, every manual i've read for my bmw said 88. I'll use anti-seize on bolts if they have a habit of corroding and sticking really bad, otherwise not. We did the same on customer's car/trucks when i used to work in a tire shop years ago.

I use a blue torque stick for 17mm lugbolts and a gray one for E65s and X5s.

I would never use anti-seize on the bolts that hold my wheels on the car. I wouldn't want them to come loose.

I went back for re-torquing after driving around 50-60 miles, was that overkill? It was recommended by the wheel manufacturer.

He's just trying to be funny. The actual spec is is nm and the precise mathematical equivalent is probably 88.5. It's irrelevant.

Yeah I though it was a good idea to do that, but the tire installer mentioned that although they recommend it to their customers (they work on Porsche, Lexus, BMW and other high end cars) rarely does anyone ever come back. It only took 2 minutes and I could have done it myself if I had a torque wrench.
