Looking to add an inexpensive sub solution to my non-hk 1994 325ic. Is it possible to use the E46 convertible HK subwoofer and mount in the ski boot location just as the E36 version? If so, how would this be wired to the amp? and I belive the E46 has a separate amp...how should this be powered?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why not go for the e36 subwoofer?
(btw I just bought an e36 HK sub, HK amp and gonna collect the HK loom tomorrow at my dealer as I have a stock loom witout amp.

I haven't been able to find a E36 sub...I missed one recently on Ebay...but that is the first one I've seen. I can get the E46...that's why I was inquiring.

I hate to rain on your parade, but do you realize that the HK amp is not compatible with the non-HK speakers because the HK speaker impedances differ from the standard ones? If you cruise the audio section of the forum a bit you will find out what a PITA it is to upgrade this system (which is not a particularly good one in the first place, HK or not).
It's no problem. I have looked into it. If it is really troublesome I'll get the HK midranges.
I also no it's not the besy quality either, even though it's H/K. As you may know or not, I'm very "OEM" and not into aftermarket audio, so for me it's good enough.
Oh thanks for the warning, but I'm afraid your too late

Actually MParallel, since you've researched it, can you tell me what a fair price would be for me to sell the following:
The entire HK system including:
Also, what can you tell me about the wiring? I don't want to have it be a huge PITA to rip wiriing out of my car; so I'd be inclined to let the buyer fend for himself on the wiring, but what should I know about telling a potenital buyer about what they'd face with hooking up the above components?
- Amp
- Subwoofer
- CD Changer
- Cassette Deck w/ changer controls
- All the HK Midrange & Tweeter Speakers
I was thinking about selling it all together so I wouldn't have to worry about being left with a few components here & there that I couldn't sell (like the tape deck). But would I be better off to sell it piecemeal, and if so; what kind of pricing would be fair on this stuff. I know there's enough OEM guys like you (or people that need replacement HK stuff) that it should sell...
Oh, and for what it's worth, compared to a non-HK system or compared even to a system that has aftermarket 5 1/4" coaxials all the way around, the HK system is better. There is actually a level of bass from the HK sub that greatly improves the music. It's not earth shattering or anything that would compare with even an 8" aftermarket sub, but it's night and day better than not having a sub at all in the normal E36 system. It's simply amazing how even a little bit of low end will make a huge difference. I drove with the HK system from Northern CA to Washington state and it wasn't all that bad. Not good enough for my tastes, so that's why I'm ripping it out and putting in a new system from the ground up.

Oh, and I'm not sure, but one thing I do know is that the E46 has more room for a subwoofer in their ski pass. I know this because BSW makes a 10" ski pass sub for the E46 vert, but they can only shoehorn an 8" sub into the E36 skipass. I've measured and I wasn't able to find a workable 10" aftermarket "marine" bandpass sub that I could stuff in the E36... I think IIRC that it was about 9 1/2" or so in diameter under the convertible boot compartment on the E36...

Good questions really, but in all honesty, what are realistic prices are is so hard to tell. It's not stuff you see being sold many times like other stuff to make a good estimate.
And whether or not to sell it all as one set or seperate pieces...I think most people already have some components and/or don't need everything except certain parts (I'm still looking for the midranges with the HK logo on the grill ..in black).
Thing is, the HK systems has a different main loom as the other systems as it has the sub. So if you don't sell it, people have to do what I did and buy the loom as I'm not gonna fiddle with non-OEM wiring, because I'm sure I will mess up. And the sub would then just piggyback of some other speaker, which I don't want.

I started this post based on what I read from MParrallel's upgrade. I'm looking to do the same and I am only in need of certain pieces. I am interested in the subwoofer and the amp...I've already collected everything else (except the loom as MParrallel notes).
PM me with a price.

And I'm also connecting up the non-vert HIFI switch....
Which changes the soundstage. On verts it's hooked up to the roof module someway changes it automatically when the roof is up/down.
But I also want to do so when I feel like. And I love the extra lights/switches

Folkert,
Whats the lillte thing right to the H/K switch?
Love the extra mounting space for switches, but I cant think of anything to put there in my vert (I have the same setup of switches as you right now: seatheating, roofswitch, alarm led, asc+t and seatheating)

I've found out that the going rate is ~$100 for the HK Amp. But I'm still trying to figure out what's realistic to sell the sub for. I don't want to give mine away, but don't want to overprice it as well.
I know it has limited demand (just us vert owners), but it also seems there's quite a limited supply as well.
I've had one guy offer $65... But just want to get a feel for if that's realistic.

Hard to say, but if you see dealer new prices....€250 for the sub, €500(!) for the amp. That's Euro's!
With a straight dollar conversion that is $398 for the sub and $795 for the amp.
(that's tax excluded!)
But just for the record, that gives a crooked image as you can't compare prices like that.
But now you understand why we Euro's buy so much from the states right now.
In my case I had to as I have looked around for the sub since I had the car and I have never seen one for sale here in Holland or Germany.

Right, you can't compare STEALERSHIP prices to the used market...
I guess I'll have at least one more indication of price in about 4 days, as there's one up on Ebay right now:

I sold an H/K sub to a member last year. Unfortunately, I don't recall what the sale price was. Maybe $80-$100? They're pretty rare, but demand may be also.
FYI, I never see this mentioned when people discuss doing the swap, but to do the full H/K system, you'll need to replace the rear speakers with H/K ones as well. (See the photos of my set below.)

I don't have the sub anymore, but the rears are still for sale. PM me if interested.

You guys are great. I really appreciate all of the input and responses in answering the questions to this thread.
I've just about got everything in place. HK Kick Panel Speakers (mint condition approx $12 each), HK Rear Speakers for Convertible (mint condition $32 each). I just need an HK amp that supports the subwoofer (which part number?) & of course the subwoofer. The other issue is the loom.
MParrallel...did you purchase the loom new? or used?
