I havent been able to find an actual fluid spec from BMW anywhere in my owner's manual or online. Is it the same stuff as in the transmission (ATF)?
i think the transfer case holds atf. i used to have a 4matic mb, and the transfer case had the automatic tranny fluid in it, so i'm assuming bmw too uses atf in their transfer case.
It's MTF-LT fluid....it's a light weight gear oil (specifically 75W-80)...your car uses a whopping 1/3 qt....BMW p/n 83 22 9 408 942, unfortunately BMW doesn't sell it by the qt..some do but you will have to bring in your own container and they will fill you up from a 55 gal container...they like to charge allot for this stuff...I've heard in the $20 range...

so since the manual gearbox calls for ATF.... Can I get away and put ATF in there?
The ATF in the manual gearbox is much lighter/thinner than 75W-80.
You might be able to get away with some high-quality synthetic 75W-90 gear oil, such as Royal Purple Max Gear or Redline.
HOW DO U PUT? THERE IS A DRAIN PLUG ON THE BOTTOM AND A REFIL ON THE OTHER SIDE ON TOP? HOW MUCH U PUT OF Royal Purple Max Gear IN THE GEAR BOX?
Yes it can use Red Line D4 ATF I have had this in my car for about two years now but im gonna switch to a closer to spec oem type fluid which is the Redline MTL (70W80 GL-4 Gear Oil)
Fill plug is on the back side top and drian is on the front bottom.
