I have a 1985 635 CSI # E24 RA - 69 which is an Australian specification 5 speed manual.
The Battery was disconnected ;
and the OBC now shows; "- - - -" . (blinking)
Can somone please help me with instructions to reset it.
Thanks
R.
In the bottom right corner there is a tiny recessed button so small that you must use a straightened paper clip or fine tip ball point pen to push it. It is called the changeover contact.
The display should be reading "- - - - UHR". The UHR means metric units, so first change the units:
1) Press the "AVG MPG" button.
2) Press the changeover contact once for U.S. (MPG), twice will give you Imp. (M/P), and three metric (L/100)
Next use the four buttons across the bottom to input the time, the "1000" will set the first digit, the "100" the next and so on. Press the changeover contact to finish. If the AM/PM is wrong, press the "1000" button twice.
To set the date, Press the "HR-DATE" button and then the changeover contact. Input the date using the four buttons across the bottom as with the time and then press the changeover contact to finish.
Hope this helps
I had the same problem on my 89 635 when my battery went dead. I followed the handbook instructions, but not all the settings stored, such as avg mpg, distance, etc. If you have the same problem Try a tip my local specialist told me. Disconnect the poitive terminal on the battery, then switch on the ignition, reconnect the battery terminal, and then enter all the settings as usual. I have used this procedure a few times over the years and it has worked every time.
how do u reset the oil service light. i've tried connecting pin #7 to ground many times and it always fails.
Currently looking for e24. PM me if you see anything interesting.
Also, looking for my old car. Sold it in 2014 to someone in Northern CA. He sold it shortly thereafter and doesn't remember to who. It was a bronzit '85 euro, lowered, headlight wipers/washers (that worked!), rear black spoiler, 5 speed, nutria interior (however i removed original buffalo leather interior and replaced with manual sport seats (front and rear).
most likely a shot PCB in the instrument cluster. Did you ever change the batteries in there?
Check out theses links on the SI board:

well normally is different than perfectly. the lights work and its in the orange and red and the number of red lights that flash differ. but sometimes the whole thing will flash constantly very quickly. how much is it to replace the SI board??

no big deal, but sort of time consuming because taking out the instrument cluster requires to lower the steering column:
Remove steering wheel.
Remove cover under the dashboard
Loosen two 13mm nuts which hold the steering column in plase.
Push the steering column downwards to get the necessary clearance to pull the instrument cluster after having taken out two screws on each side (behind a plastic strip/cover).
Disassemble instrument cluster to get access to the PCB
Sometimes leaking batteries destroy the PCB but if you know how to use a solder iron you can even repair it.
That's it.

Do you happen to know how to reset the OBC on a 84 633. I picked mine up a few months ago and the owners manual in the glove box is for a 635. Unfortunately the OBC is a little different and there is no recessed button to push with a paper clip and I still have the flashing "----".
For the 633, you start by pressing the Clock button (or maybe it's Time) three times. The display will switch from "----" to blank and you'll be able to enter the time on the keypad (pressing and holding the Clock button will toggle the AM/PM indicator). Then press Start. At that point the OBC should be good to go.
Here is the page from the owners manual:

I will give that a shot, thanks a lot.
Hi, I am restoring a 1985 635csi and cannot get obc to reset to F insted of C, on the outside temp, when you say changeover contact what button are you talking about. I dont have an owners manual so I dont know which one operaites this function. Thanks warshp
You may want to start a new thread as this one is four+ years old. But if I remember correctly, you push in the reset button then push the mpg button to alternate between us and metric. Then push the reset button again.
Actually, Chris tells you how to do it in the second post above. I was wrong, it's the reset button that alternates between units. changeover contact is the small intent button (i call it the reset button). use a paperclip
