Does Anyone Know The difficulty of swapping an m62 with auto tranny to a s62 with getrag 6-speed? I'm interested in doing this conversion but cannot seem to find any information on the swap. Should the suspension be swapped also or will the stock suspension on a 540 hold the weight for now?
As I understand it, the mechanicals are easy and dealing with the electricals is a nightmare. The numbers I've heard for an auto to manual swap on an E39 (or any other late model BMW) tend to say that trading in the car for one with a manual is cheaper option.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Becuase it's easier and cheaper to just sell your 540 and get the M5 instead.

yep, a lot cheaper to buy the M5. Just the s62 motor and 6 speed transmission will cost you $$$$$$$ plus the labor $
Just get an M5. Cause there's a lot more than just the engine and tranny differences... Plus it would be cheaper.

Or do what I'm doing
M5 brakes, suspension and diff and then add more power to the engine
Bmw did that exact swap back in '00. It was called the M5.

You would save alot of money and time to buy an M5 instead that has an S62 in it already
Follow these instructions
1) Buy the M5
Problem solved.
Someone is doing this now. M62 S/C to S62 S/C. More Info if you find out anything please.

Yeah, but it's for the price of 3 used e39 m5's to make one.....no thanks.

So...all that i havee concluded from reading this thread = ZERO. If someone (me) had access to a reasonably priced s62 and transmission and wasn't going to get pillaged on labor, (and really likes HIS e39) could it be done without too much difficulty?

You got your answer. It could NOT be done without too much difficulty. It seems like the general consensus is that it would be a clusterfuk's amount of difficulty. If you're dead set on doing it, then you should do it and ignore what the people in here post. Just be mentally prepared for partial failure/success.
I really do not get why people think putting an M5 suspension in a 540 is a good idea. Sway bar, sure. But M5 springs and shocks? Why?Or do what I'm doing
M5 brakes, suspension and diff and then add more power to the engine
Possibly, maybe, conceivably, thinking about getting back into another E39. Hide your daughters
go on bimmerfest and look up m5 wagon a guy did it be did it real nice too that's the best answer I could give the only thing problematic with adding the m5 motor I'd the lack of LSD and all the amennities of the m5 now if you did something crazy like dropping the m5 motor into something crazy like a e30 m3 that would be sick good luck bro yeah everyone is giving you the solution most fesible and honestly the beat solution
Where is that thread about the top 20 posts that annoy you the most?...
In all seriousness I'd listen to everybody else. Like others have said it wouldn't only be cheaper to buy the M5 but you also get a slew of other things by buying an M5. These include sways, suspension, brakes, alcanatara headliner, nicer interior, different cluster, LSD, drive spindles, etc. etc.
Also consider that the S62 is heavier than the M62. The M62 by default is already nose heavy with the suspension it has and that would only be exasperated with the weight of the S62.

Mechanically it is reasonable, electrical is the problem..... The ecu for a manual is different from that of an auto. Custom programing or swap all three ecu, lcm and instrument cluster from the doner M5?
It could happen w/ a reasonably priced M5 parts car.
