    Error code P0305

I have a 2007 530i that ran perfectly for the year I have had it. This morning it was a little damp, but nothing crazy, but when I started my car it ran very rough to where there was a continuous shake. It shakes more on acceleration but doesn't seem to have any issue when I put the peddle down hard. The code says it's cylinder 5 misfire. I know the most likely bandit is spark plugs or coils. The only thing I am really questioning is the fact that there was no deterioration period. My car went from a lion to a kitty overnight. It has 137k miles and though it seems well taken care of, I can't be sure of the history of maintenance. I am new to BMW's and am not much of a mechanic to begin with. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thank you!

That's how coil packs work great one minute bad the next. Check for faults, if misfire fault present. Mark and move the coil pack, clear faults see if misfire follows moved coil pack,if it does coil pack is bad. If coil packs are original replace all of them with spark plugs if needed

As was said above, swap coils between cylinders to see if misfire follows coil to other cylinder.

I'll just add my 2 cents; it's a little different.

If it were my own 137k mile '07 car, I'd buy it 6 new sparkplugs and at least one new coil. I'd mention that I had an '07 in my bay just today. Third time it's come in for misfires, in the last six months. The first time, cylinder 2. There was a lot of oil in the spark plug wells, I asked for 6 plugs, 6 coils, and a valve cover gasket set.

The owner bought the plugs, one coil, and the gasket set. 3 weeks later, code for cylinder 5 misfires. Replaced coil 5 only, in spite of my recommending again to replace the remaining coils.

Today he bought the rest of the coils. (Cylinder 6 misfire)

But really, removing all that plastic crap twice, to avoid spending, oh, $24 on an incredibly common failure part.

6 spark plugs and 6 coils will cost ~$210, really, only a tiny fraction of the ~ $2000 a year you need to spend on maintenance and repairs...
