Hi James,
As you've already seen, those cheap chinese, no brand/clone type units aren't very good at all - I'd suggest not bothering to change to it at all and another reason is that given they use low quality/generic electronics, their sound quality is similarly low quality/performance.
The most efficient way for you to upgrade the sound quality will be a different direction. You'd start by replacing the oem speakers with a custom fit upgrade package from the likes of Gladen, MTX, Focal, Earhtquake, MB Quart who all do E90 specific kits. You simply swap them out with the oem ones. They make the 'best' of the oem amp and for many owners, the increase in SQ is enough for them. Prices range from around £325 for the MTX setup (look on UK ebay) to perhaps £5/600 for the higher end brands packages. At that stage, if you find you want more performance and quality, adding a suitable small and powerful quality amplifier to drive those upgraded speakers, will make them play even better! Many who do this level are then happy with the resulting performance. If you find that's still not quite enough bass (the mid range and treble being fine) some owners will then add a 8/10/12 inch subwoofer in the boot and have the subwoofer 'fire' through the ski hatch for 100% efficient sub bass into the cabin.
Here's a review of the MTX setup - https://www.talkstuff.net/index.php/...offering-r1911
If you wish to create more of an install to show off in the boot, then you could certainly do that if you wish - I've not got an E9x boot build pic but here's an E39 that lives a couple miles away from me, and an E60 from some years back from one of the regular car meet/show guys
Clean, simple yet fantastic sounding setups in both cars. Do keep in mind that when doing more of a show type build, the costs can escalate quite quickly!
For independent confirmation of what I mention above, read this and give them a call to discuss if you wish

There are options where you can change the head unit if you wish and fit a proper, high quality and reputable brand unit and the performance would be a lot better than that chinese unit. Have a look at this fascia from Janus Design - http://www.janus-design.net/english/index.php
I don't think there's space to fit 6x9's though! -
Overall, depending on how well you want your music reproduced, there's multiple ways you could go and will depend on your budget etc too.
Cheers, Dennis!
