I had the original 2010 battery in my Z and was occasionally getting diagnostic messages of "excessive battery discharge" or something similar. Plus after sitting a day or 2, when I would open the door in the morning, the automatic 1/4" window drop would go down, up, down, up, down, up (sometimes left door, sometimes right, sometimes both). But this would clear up immediately after starting to drive and it never happened in the afternoon on the drive home. I thought it was reasonable that could be caused by a low batt voltage and figured it was time to replace the battery.
It was far more convenient for me to go to my local service station than my BMW dealer [ this is known as foreshadowing ] and I specifically asked them "is this something you can do or should I take it to a dealer?" They assured me they could do it. They did replace it with an approved battery.
Now I have various electrical problems. Headlights do not work, all 4 windows will not go up or down, blinker do not work, interior lights do not work, power mirrors do not work.
However, the heated seats work, radio works, horn, nav, power seats, ac/fan/defrosters, wipers, emergency brake, brakelights..... all work.
I looked at the fuse list and obviously there is nothing in common with everything that has failed. I'm really hoping this is just a computer reset and not a computer failure. I'll be going to the dealer ASAP but is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this more?
No, sorry, I'd bet dimes to dollars that your footwell module has taken a crap.
Now, since you clearly understand "foreshadowing", you need to know that your window drop issue was also "foreshadowing" the module failure. There's not going to be a way to make sure of whether the shop had anything to do with the module failure....
All that said, you now have to go to a real BMW specialist, either a good indy shop, or the dealership. If you go to an Indy, ask first if they have ISTA (BMW's diagnostic and programming computer). ISTA will make the diagnosis simple (and like I said, I'd already bet you need a footwell module), but most importantly, the new FRM will need to be coded to your car, which the generic shop's OBD code reader will not be able to do.
EDIT: By the way, are your carpets wet at all?
