So i recently bought my first bmw. its a 98 318i this car is awesome. however i want to beef it up alot. i want to put a bigger camshaft better pistons ecu heads ect pretty much anything to give it the power it deserves. the turbo will come after the motor is at top performance haha. Any way i need help on where to get all this. a direct link would be awesome. I have already thought of doing a swap and would rather keep the motor thats in it now thanks again.
3 easy steps
1. Sell it.
2. Buy an M3.
3. Done.
It's not speed that kills, it's the speed difference that does. Obviously you aren't going fast enough.

I read a list of the 100 things you MUST do before you die. Funny, "Yelling 'HELP'" didn't make the list!
If i could afford an m3 i would

Building an engine will cost a lot and I really don't know how much more power you would get out of the engine. Do a swap, some guy put an 540 v8 in one. Or just same your money drive it until you can find something different, I do like gobuffs response.
E36 M3s are sub 10k. What you are talking about doing is more than $10k. Even an E46 M3 is in the lows 10s.
There just isn't a lot of performance parts for a 4 cylinder. Plus once you get into the 6 cylinder all the suspension and driveline parts are beefier.

By the time you build your M44 race engine and get it running correctly you will have spent more money than an S54 swap would have cost. You'd definitely be better off selling the car when the time is right, saving up some cash in the meantime, and buying an E36 or E46 M3.
To answer your question, there is a poor-man's S42 build you can piece together by mixing and matching parts from other models. I don't remember the details, but you use the crank from a Euro diesel E46, pistons and rods from some US-spec engines, and throttle bodies from a Euro S50. That gives you a 2.0 or 2.1 Liter stroker. Then cams and valvetrain components from dbilas. Again, I don't remember the details, but it's all out there on the forums. When all is said and done, you'll be making maybe 225 hp.
If you're building a replica of an FIA Super Touring car or something like that, then I guess it makes sense.
