What do you think it is?
For me, I believe the most significant BMW produced was the E21. Until then, BMW was relatively unknown, except by car enthusiasts. With the E21, young professionals discovered the quality of BMW and enjoyed it's driving dynamics. From there, things took off and the E30 sealed BMWs legacy.
I don't agree, the 2002 was the car that paved the way for BMW in the USA. The US spec k-jet e21 was a slug.

Stuff. I got stuff.
E30,, with out doubt,, there is no car that BMW have made that have such a religious followers as the E30 club,, no car EVER from BMW have gone through as many swap as the E30 etc etc

2002 or even better, the entire New Class family.
That miserable little 4 banger took over the world.

Yep, the 2002 saved the company effectively. Let's just forget about that horrible 2000CS....
And the 2.0L is a great little engine! Loved my 2002, reliable and plenty of pep. The horrible, asthmatic versions in the E21 and E30 did it no justice.
Interested in vintage cars? Ever thought about racing one?

I would say the 02 series cars as well. They are what established BMW's reputation for small, fun to drive luxury cars and set the stage for BMW's bread and butter 3 series that continue the exact same theme to the present day.

BMW - where "Why doesn't everybody build cars the way they do?" meets "Why can't they build a car the same way everyone else does it?"
