2-7-17 update: I still have 5 left and price lowered to $74 with free shipping in US. I just want them gone.
1-21-17 update: All sold. I got one more shipment of 5 at even lower price at $81 each with fee shipping included. It seems that this might be the very last one as my supplier informs me that next batch would be way more expensive at $100+.
1-17-17 update: Thermostats are here and 4 are shipping tomorrow. 6 still available if anybody is interested.
This topic been covered zillion times but general consensus is that 105 C opening temp in M62TU factory thermostat is great for the fuel economy and emissions but not so great for plastic cooling components.
Additional problem is that if your system is not operating at 100% (dirty clogged radiator, failing fan clutch etc...) the operating temp can quickly raise to 110 C + which is really getting close to *&^%$#.[/COLOR]
For those who remember the High school Physics classes, more heat = more pressure so it's 2 enemies against the cooling system.
Direct fit to any E53 X5, E38 740i and E39 540i with M62TU engine.
This is mechanical thermostat that opens at 88 C and you'll see average running temp of around 88 C - 93 C vs. 105 C - 110 C.
In order to avoid CEL you simply connect 10 OHM resistor to disconnected OEM thermostat DME wiring connector.
This thermostat came originaly on E38 740D and here are some specs:
https://catalog.mahle-aftermarket.co...lterId=1164537
It is genuine Mahle / Behr brand made in Germany and it comes with o ring included.
Between here, Xoutpost and ebay I've sold about 2 dozen units so far.
This current bulk shipment allowed me to offer the lowest price so far.
PM if interested.
Thanks.

Is the S62 thermostat not adaptable to M6x engines? Just curious ...
Going to call you Mr Stat from now on Z. Doing a good deed lowering all these motors Temps down.

I tend to agree. If I were to cherry pick an ideal tstat temp for the M62 it would be 93°C which is the temperature the engine wants to stay on when you drive it normally (mixed loads, reasonable and sensible throttle input, no babying it but not drag racing)
I haven't spend a winter driving after I switched to the 88°C, but I don't see how it would stay below 91-92°C even doing light load continuous drive on cool weather. I don't know about harsh winters, but the M62 is an engine that tends to heat up as fast as it cools down if you drive it right, so all factors considered I'm happy with the 88°C.
I cannot state how much more peaceful I drive now that I don't feel like the engine is about to melt. I haven't even worried a little about cooling system nightmares since I replaced the tstat for the 88°C one. And I like to worry!

It seems that I have 3 guys interested.
I'm fairly sure about 2, still waiting on one.
To be honest, I shouldn't have problem to sell the rest on ebay but if you want one for great price, here is your chance.

Repeat customer super happy with themostat, I'm getting one for my 4.6 I'm assembling, pm sent
E85 fueled, Eaton m112 supercharged 4.5L M62TU, TTV racing flywheel, Spec stage 2+ clutch, 88c thermostat, eibach sway bars, wavetrac 3.15 lsd, m5 steering box, Quantum 340lph fuel pump, Dinan camber plates, some powerflex bushings, Supersprint headers, M5 cats, 2001 gas pedal upgrade and many other things done. all diy by me
Good choice on the 88C thermostat, been running them in my 740 and 540 for few years now, no problems at all, no check engine light and the temps always stay around 93C fully warmed up.

Glad to hear long term review.
I also wanted to clarify as most people here know but some may not:
Running 88 C (or any conventional thermostat) doesn't mean the temp will stay exactly at that temp. 88 C means that when temp in head/s reaches that point, thermostat opens and lets the coolant circulate through radiator and back in the head/s making the full circle.
So it's quite possible seeing 85 C while driving out in cold weather where cold air "over cools" or running at 93 C at warmer weather where system might not have fan clutch, slightly dirty radiator cells, sitting in traffic, under load etc...
Interested in 2 of these. Pm me please.
Sent PM, i'll go for one. Thanks..
