Just have been noticing the few 8s listed on fleabay seem to show slow but ever increasing resale listing prices. Listing today show 840s and 850s, with auto, Ci not CSI, for up to $30k for lower mileage units. About time! What do you think? Will they get this much?
Probably not.
I think the BAT auctions have done pretty well.

Prices are going up at an increasing rate in the UK - we have an 850csi for $76,000, and we have an 840ci Individual going for $45,581. The cheapest 850ci can be found for $10,764 - and these used to go for around $4,000 a few years ago:

It's a great colour for the E31, and it looks in pretty good condition too.
It probably went for that price because it has over 100,000 miles - and that magic figure used to knock 50% off the value of an 840ci a couple of years ago, not any more, I saw a late 840ci with 90.000 being advertised as 'low mileage'!
Edit: This is the one - and it's 98K!

Not really low mileage, but a nice looking example all the same.......apart from the cartoon-sized tailpipe extensions!
98k kms would be low mileage.

The Blue one Timm posted a link to is a beauty, very rare color, but the dam steering wheel was put on the wrong side of the car!

I guess I'll wait another 10 years for a run-of-the-mill 850i to be worth anything. Not that I will ever sell it. I did used to see some unimpressive ones go for 5-7k locally but recently those that are available are above 10k.

I believe this to be a distinct possibility. It's (one of the reasons) why I grabbed a $5k six-speed while I still could. I don't buy cars as investments, but in the rare case that they happen to appreciate in value, that's just icing on the cake. I don't mind that my M Coupe has more than doubled in value since I picked it up a few years ago. Maybe the 8 will do the same over time. I've got some money to put into it to get it back up to shape in the meanwhile...
Cheers, John
That Blue CSi is a 5min drive from me, looks very tidy. If it is #62 then its the one after my#61

US import is really all about age, not about make or model. It's all comparatively simple once the car hits 25 years old.
EDIT: I just caught that you are in California. Please take my original comment above with a grain of salt as a result. 25-year-old cars are not required to meet federal highway or safety standards, emissions standards, etc., in order to be imported into the United States. (Do some quick searches on the 25-year import rule -- information is very easy to find.) However, California is infamous for being the thorn in the auto enthusiast's side -- its asinine CARB rules even bleed over and affect the rest of us on occasion. I stand by my statement that a 25-year-old car is easy to import regardless of make or model, but I make no guarantee that your state will allow you to use it. Nearly any other state will.
Cheers, John

hi, just joined on this thread and site. I have owned my csi for nearly a year now after trying to buy the car for over 2 years. Prices seem to be shooting up for these and it was now or never. Mine is a 94 oxford green with 70k miles and full BMW main dealer service history.
prices going up as they should
1991 BMW 850i
1984 Porsche 928S
I hope it turns out to be like the e30 m3 because I'm kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on one of these 5yrs ago.
E30 M3 = 16,500 units produced
E31 850CSi = 1,510 units produced
Although the E30 M3 is more of an iconic car with a huge following, I believe that the 850CSi is soon going to be a highly expensive collectible classic, which is another reason why I decided to buy my car back again, before the prices go crazy.

I'm not sure how much prices have actually shot up, but I have noticed that finding nice used parts is becoming much more difficult and pricey just as finding nice examples for sale is also becoming much more difficult.
The nice cars that do pop up (later years, sub-100K mileage) are listing between 15-20K USD on average, so that is a sign of moving in the right direction IMO.
