    Just bought a certified 2013 X3 with 44k miles. The warranty takes it out 2 additional years and 75k miles. Is the prepaid maintenance to mirror the extended warranty worth $2500? ...i.e., what problems could be anticipated, oil changes, brakes, brake flush, transmission flush, etc? BTW Doubt if we'll add 15,00 miles to the odometer that 2 years.

    I would not. There are many BMW independent shops that charge half of what the dealer charges should you need one or if so inclined fix it yourself depending on the issue. The money saved can fix a lot of potential issues that may never arise. I am an avid DIY person who loves to work on my 05 Mercedes CLK320 with 102K miles. I replaced the thermostat, alarm horn, serpentine belt, spark plugs and valve cover gaskets by myself (and regular oil changes) and I took it to an independent shop that specializes in Mercedes and I had the conductor plate inside the transmission changed for $800 but the exact same repair by the dealer would have cost me over $1600. If you are not a DIY person than get the extended warranty. About 3 weeks ago I bought a 2011 X3 with 57000 miles and I did not purchase an extended warranty. If I have any issues I can not handle myself then fixing it at an independent BMW shop will save me a lot of money.

    If it is certified then I am assuming that you bought it at a dealer. Ask them if and when any any work was done to the car recently

    Thanks Timewarpone, yes it can from the only BMW dealer in Austin. I used to be able to do most maintenance, but these cars are so complicated nowadays and I'm not getting any younger. My experience in Austin, TX is...these independent repair shops are not much cheaper than the "stealers". But, I don't have any experience with independent BMW specialists. My experience has been with Mercedes shops post warranty.
    Good idea about checking on the recent service at the dealer, it just came off warranty at the 4 year mark. It was purchased new from this dealer. Another con on the maintenance is...I probably won't put 12-15K miles on it in 2 years.

    If you will only do 15k, I can't see how you would spend even 500 in maintenance, unless you need tires.

    also just purchased a 2013 X3(35K miles). It has 18" runflats. Thinking about going to 19" (maybe 20"). Any advice or things to keep in mind?
    I gather the ride would be nicer? any advice welcomed.

    I have no personal experience driving on runflats but the reasons I stay away from them are:
    - you can drive only up to 150 km (about 90 miles) at a speed of 80 km/hr (50 mph) on a flat runflat.... I regularly drive my X3 on highways where there are at least 500 km between locations where a runflat could be repaired or replaced
    - once you have driven on the flat runflat it becomes a very expensive throwaway tire as the interior sidewalls are likely damaged sufficiently that no tire shop would attempt to repair it ... where are you going to buy a matching runflat in the middle of nowhere? ... so out in the middle of nowhere you are at the mercy of a roadside tire shop for 4 new runflats and he is looking at you with $$$ signs in his eyes like you are some rich guy just because you drive a BMW .... and if your tread is 50 plus % worn then you are automatically in the market for 4 new ones no matter where you are ....

    Also, I prefer to have some tire sidewall between me and the road ... as for 19 or 20 inch wheels all you get is a rubber band wrapped around the wheel ... I don't think the ride is nicer ... it is actually a harsher ride ... some dudes may think the larger wheels look cool, but practical they are not.

    This is my take on run flat tires. I neither agree or disagree with using them. Unfortunately we BMW users, specifically my X3, requires us to use them wether we like them or not. This vehicle (X3) is produced without a spare tire or tools to change a flat. The owners manual says because of run flat tires you can drive long and far enough to have the tire repaired or buy another one. I personally do not like the choice made for me. I would even rather have a donut spare. I have no experience with run flat tires but my guess if you can drive 100 miles at 50 miles an hour the sidewall should hold up so the tread can be patched. My 2011 X3 came with 245/55R17 run flat tires. These tires are not cheap.

    If you're comfortable without a spare, get pneumatic tires to replace the rfs. I'm now running 19 inch DWS06 06 Continentals. Big improvement.
