Yeah, the M5 mirror folding action is a little weird and the gears wear out so the mirrors never fold all that smoothly.

So.... this is cool. BMW AG actually sent me the build sheet for this car... tee hee. I could have pulled it up myself, but it was cool to get it from BMW. I am going to see if there is anyway to get the Dealer Sale Sheet for the car (doubtful since it was sold used).

Also, I got the "official" explanation about Code S916 - GG actually stated it in a previous thread - that man got some mad knowledge! . Seems I will also be sharing the car's story on BMW's FB. More to come.

Here is the last response I received.

    Dear Mr. Xxxxxxxxxxxxx,

Thank you again for your message.
Please find enclosed the build sheet for your BMW 525i.

The option code “S916 Development Vehicle w/o Conservation” means that the car was not conserved after it was assembled as it was not shipped but taken over by the respective department for testing and remained in the possession of BMW AG. Cars which are shipped are usually coated with conserving wax to protect the outside of the car during shipment from scratches.

We would like to wish you good luck in restoring your BMW. Maybe you would like to share some pictures of it with us on our Facebook channel once the work is done?

    Best regards,

    Verena Xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Sweet!

^^ Nice! Looks like a win win for both parties.

Regarding the chat about e39 folding mirrors, do they fold with the remote or does it have to be programmed?

On the mirror, I saw in the ETK today that it was an accessory item

The M5 mirrors don't need to be programmed. You just need to have the right mirror module and they will fold by pressing a button.

On the topic of the rear view mirror with the compass, it looks to be an USA accessory option as seen here from the ETK for my ‘02 Touring - http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...terior_mirror/

I might be doing a bit of thread-jacking here so forgive me. I see this went from folding outside mirrors to inside mirrors with compass feature...so I'm going to take us further off the ranch. We used to split the self dimming ones so we could install the Escort 9500's remote display behind them so the info display was hidden behind the glass and not visible when off, but you could see it when in use.
    ok...sorry Aquila...I'm outta here now.

There were two mirror mentions by Aquila. 1) the folding and 2) the rear view he removed.

It's a good point raised (tangent) for the Escort feature.

Cool, thx for the response. let me add a bit more context. don't mean to further detail. I am speaking about an e39 m5. i know the button inside, on the door handle, folds the mirrors in and out.
if i press the lock button on the remote key, shouldn't they go up and down as well?
