    Engine whirring noise.

I have a 1994 BMW 325i convertible. Since I purchased this car I have been hearing a whirring noise from the engine. It is most noticeable at idle. The pitch changes when I rev the engine or if I use anything power. EX: the power windows, turn signals, the convertible top. Anyone know what is causing this? Is this a fix I can do, or do I have to go to a mechanic? Thanks!

Alternator sounds like it's on the way out....carefull though, if the rectifier is going out it will feed ac current into a dc battery....go have the alternater tested
