Hi,
I'm referring to these bars behind the front grill (black here):
As far as I found out they're used in most or all newer models.
At first I'd like to find out what they're even called since my research for "Diagonal bars behind grill" wasn't really successful so far.
Then I need to know if I can have such bars in my 2004 E60. I'd have them painted since this looks ridiculously great!
I'm like 99% sure I don't have them already but I'd need to check after work.
If I don't, I feel like there isn't really much space behind that grill.
Anyone ever saw an E60 with those bars?

Works for me, however here it is as an attachment:

I just checked and I do in fact have such bars, however they are thinner than it appears in above picture.
Also they are hidden behind the air flaps directly behind the front grill.
Now I got two questions:
I'm sure it serves a purpose that these flaps are closed while standing.
What would be the disadvantage of opening them either permanently or temporarily (for showing off :P) or removing them all together?
Second, is it possible to exchange them by thicker ones?
Note that German TÜV is involved

Kinda driving this thread myself but I just want to share what I was able to find out:
The flaps, i.e. radiator shutter may be pushed open by hand when the ignition is off but it'll lock as soon as the engine starts.
It only unlocks when certain temperatures of the engine or oil is reached.
It's supposed to help warming up the engine in cold weather.
Therefor I won't permanently remove it since it seems kinda handy during the cold season.
What I'll decide on is whether to remove them during the summer or just for certain events.
But that I probably will decide after I opened up the front to see how it's reachable and - to get back to topic - how hard it is to remove those "diagonal bars behind grill".
Seems odd to accent those bars to me...

At least on newer models I totally like how it looks when coloured.
I'm optimistic that I can achieve the same on my E60.
Obviously all of this is a matter of taste.

Quick update for you.
About 3 weeks ago I was outside at my car and thought: Well, I have to get to them.. Let's just remove this quickly, and that.. hmm, now this.
One thing led to an other: I found myself without a front bumper.
After that I just unscrewed those bars (which is actually one - didn't know that before) und painted it.

Also works well with my engine cover:

Those flaps are now held up be some simple cord which I can fix in either position (always open / loose).
