1 have a 1988 528e noise that makes a harsh noise whenever I take off from a dead stop. Upon take off it sounds as if something is going to come through the transmission tunnel. Once under way I hear no other noise. This clunk is only going forward, I never hear anything from dead stop to reverse.
In my research, it sounds as if a bushing/bushings from driveshaft to rear differential may be the culprit. I have never gotten my hands into the drivetrain and my farm this out unless someone can walk me through the process, things to watch out for, etc.

Check the guibo first. That part connects the output shaft of the transmission to the driveshaft. It's made of rubber so it ages with time.
That sounds like a failure of the rubber mount for the center support bearing, which is almost always caused by binding u-joints in the drive shaft. Given the age of the car the guibo is also suspect.
If the center support bearing has failed, the only sane (and long term) fix is to replace the driveshaft/center support bearing/guibo.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
