Hey there,
So I have a 3.0 X5 2002 (E53). My lower hose, upper hose, radiator, thermostat, and radiator cap are all new. Sometimes while driving, I get a "check coolant level" warning. When I pull over, wait for it to cool down a bit, and open up the radiator cap. The coolant reservoir is full and the red indicator is up. Once I was driving and the "check coolant level" light came on. I ignored it and kept driving for around 80 miles with nothing happening. I'm sure the coolant was full because if it wasn't there is no way I could've drove that far. I opened up the cap after I parked and let the car cool down and the reservoir was once again full. I do not find puddles of coolant under my car when it is cold and parked overnight. Sometimes after a month of driving intensely, I open up the radiator cap and the indicator would be down ( a decent amount of coolant would be missing) so I top it up. But I guess its normal for that much coolant to be gone after a month of intense driving .. Right? I am scared I have an internal leak, but every time I check my oil the color and smell of it is fine (no coolant in oil). So what could this possibly be? This is really confusing me. Also I feel that I should mention that sometimes bleeding the system makes the "check coolant level" warning go away for some time. But it comes back after I drive for a while
Sounds to me like an intermittently-defective coolant-level sensor, though I have absolutely no idea where it would be located...
I also have a similar problem with my 2003 X5 4.4L, Except my upper radiator hose get sown right solid as if the system isn't circulating the fluid. I have a new water pump and thermostat, and a radiator installed less than 6 months ago. System pressure built up enough cause expansion tank to leak! Will a faulty auxiliary pump cause the system to back up?
