    clutch engagement and disengagement

Hi everyone. I own a BMW e46 318i, manual. Just yesterday I was driving down the road and I pushed my clutch down to shift down. When I released the clutch about 2 inches or so it engaged FULLY as if I had my foot off the clutch completely. I couldn't change gears while the car was running as the clutch was very soft and I felt zero resistance. I towed the car home, lifted it up today, thought it was the slave cylinder. So I took it out to bleed. But while loosening the two nuts that hold it,the rod that retracts to push the fork was not pushing the assembly out. I was baffled. I stuck my finger into the bell housing to check for the fork, and all it did was linger back and forth on its pivot. Could it be the fork has broken? Or the thrust bearing has jumped out of it? Someone please educate me.

Sounds like the throw out bearing is bad or the clutch fork has come loose from its pivot. Eaither way, the transmission needs to come out. Sorry for the bad news!

Just had this exact problem on my e36 318i. I changed the throw out bearing but when I was putting it back together in was kind of iffy about the old fork to pin clip so that led me to believe that is what it is. Dropping the tranny today to confirm.

Update. Just dropped the tranny and refitted the fork spring clip to the pin and it still won't disengage 😠. What else could it be? The clutch isn't slipping when it's in gear so I don't thing it is that. Also the fork had about 8mm of wiggle room to come off the the pin. Is it supposed to be tight on there? Thanks
