I own a 3.0 X5 2002, it has 109,000 miles on it. I don't know when it was last serviced. I dont think its transmission fluid was ever changed before. What do you think? Should I go for it? If yes, what is the exact fluid I need?
If you're in the mood to pay for a new tranny, go for it. Sad, but a strong possibility.
Changing oil in an auto stick with high miles usually causes problems. There are different opinions for this. Some say that replacing the oil causes contaminants that were tucked away in nooks/crannies/crevices to dislodge and end up in valve bodies/clutch packs etc. Others say that due to the "slipperyness" of the new oil, older and often glazed clutch packs start to slip. I personally believe in the latter.
If your tranny is acting up, you have nothing to lose. Change the oil/filter. Otherwise, leave it alone.

IMHO, change what is in the pan and the filter.
This will replace about a third of fluid in transmission. Follow this with repeating the effort every 30 to 50k miles. Flushing the transmission has shown to case more issues as previously stated.
You should have a GM sourced transmission, so use a good synthetic DEXRON 4 fluid, I like Redline, but any brand name should be good.

Thank you all for the replies. I think I will just leave it as is since there is no problem with my transmission.
