What is everyone doing for cooling in their LS1 swapped E36's. What radiators are you running and which fans? I am currently running a Mishimoto with 2 spal rear fans pulling. I creep up to about 210 degrees on a warm day.
I do feel that is a little warm for my liking however maybe that's the norm for us. Just trying to get other LS1 E36 owners input.
Single 16" spal puller. Mishimoto radiator. Still have the stock BMW fans. Mine runs a little warm. Last weekend 90 degrees. In traffic it would hit 210-215 and then the spal would kick in and bring it back down to 195. I have a 98 Wrangler with a LS6 swapped in same spal fan but a bigger radiator and it does about the same. I think some type of hood vents would make a big difference. That engine bay is tight and the heat needs to get out some way.
Makes sense 99e36ls1. I was contemplating babe but the car right now looks so unassuming which I love. I've been trying to get it cooler. I just didn't know if the 210-215 was a problem and that cooling was something I really needed to focus more time and effort on

My Silverado 6.2 runs at 200 plus all day long. That's the way it comes from the factory. I was concerned at first with the BMW due to an earlier 6.2 swap into a 73 Camaro. I put in the largest radiator I could fit. It had to be really warm out and in traffic to hit 210. Other wise it sat right at the 180 thermostat. Ran a single 16" spal with no shroud and never had a problem.
My 6.2 with stock E39 radiator and single Volvo fan runs 190-205 even in stop and go traffic with 95 degree ambient temps.

Yea see that's what I thought it should do autorotate. I mean I guess 210ish won't kill her I just worried it was a little too warm

guys with LS swaps routinely hit 230 for extended periods of time during track events, at least they do at drift events anyway
210 is fine

LSx architecture is fine with 215 temp, it's safely inside the normal range.

Street:
180 oil and coolant
Track:
190-200 Coolant
220-250 Oil
Your system is under pressure so it won't boil at 212F, in a 18 psi system, you raise the boiling temp to ~260F.
Inflame dam dude. How do you keep your temps so low? Lower thermostat? Proper ventilation?

From the bumper to the radiator it is completely sealed with my own ducting and then I'm venting the hood fairly well. My 16" SPAL rarely turns on.
215 during a race. Triple pass big radiator, hood vents and stock bmw radiator ducting. Of the three, the triple PASS radiator made the biggest difference but it was the last thing I tried. Anyone else that wants to cool the motors, go with the radiator. I've got a thread on here somewhere with details. A few other folks have done it as well with double pass setups.
On edit: running temp corrected. Rad upgrade thread: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...2#post26742102
Can't find the hood vent pics at the moment. If you search site forum, they'll pop up on a hood vent thread somewhere.

If I remember correctly I just used a regular metal hack-saw to make 2 cuts in each bracket and then just sanded/filed the edges...

look at this big double pass radiator, i kinda like the two lines being on the same side. seems like a clean install.

Also would i be able to use this little tank that was used on the original rad? Seems like only some cars had it, this is a 2001 3.0 Z3 coupe

If you are talking about expension tank by the fuse box, then yes, you should be able to reuse it.

I was looking to see if any LS swaps used this tank, turns out its just on older X5's and late Z3's
z3 tank under.jpgz3 tank top.jpg
I used a big Griffen rad and twin Derale fans with custom shroud. Recently had it dynoed. Electric fan came on a couple of times then off
even just after a dyno pull. On the highway it runs cool. I have a 160F thermostat. In town stop and go 190ish.
That thing is a beast
