I've had an awful creeping/squeaking sound coming from my left rear spring for a couple months. I could tell the bottom pad was completely worn so I ordered replacement top and bottom pads for the springs. Now that I have one of the springs out; I see my replacement top pads are 1/3 the thickness of my old ones. A little searching has taught me that E36's had 15mm,10mm and 5mm top pads. Besides the rear sitting 10mm lower if I use the thinner pads - can I expect any negative results from using the thinner replacements? Do convertibles with the sport suspension require that extra thickness as reinforcement? Should I just cut out the middle of the new 5mm ones and stack them over the old ones?
Thanks for the advice.
It depends if there is enough tension for the spring not to fall out at full droop. I think one of the cars I've bought previous had double stacked spring pads with the middle cut out. I thought it was a ghetto fix so I bought the proper pads. Do it once, do it right. Are you going to thicker pads? Because your title seems contrary to what you are asking.
