I have seen e30's ranging up to 350k miles. What is a good mileage to look for? I've read that at 100k-150k there is the "black hole" of money that consists of changing the steering rack, control arms, Driveshaft, brakes, and clutch, and a couple more things. someone was asking for 7.7k for 225k miles. What's a good mileage and price combo for a reliable driving e30?
I'd suggest to not care about mileage. Maintenance and rust are the things to look for.
On cars over 25 years old, it doesn't really matter how many miles. Wear items should have been replaced a few times already. Question is; how recently stuff has been replaced.
The M10, M42 and M20 engines aren't exactly expensive, so low mileage on those can never add a few thousand to the price of the car imo.
^ Yes to all of that.
In Cali here, I have nabbed up three e30s over the years each having around 114-130K and they were great. None of the mechanical issues you mentioned earlier. You have to look at these things on a case-by-case basis. Depends on where you live but since the economy has picked up again, the cars are climbing slightly in price. $7.5K seems a little egregious though IMO.
Buy the car, not the number
Agreed. I once bought a really clean '87 325is with 220k on it. I drove it, then turned it into a track car, and put a 20k miles on it, mostly track time at the end. I sold it to a guy who made it into a dedicated caged track car and still tracks it to this day. And that was EIGHT years ago.
That said, there's no way I'd pay $7,700 for an E30.
