Hello All,
I am looking to paint the stock wheels on my 2010 328i. I am looking to paint them either matte black or a gloss black I have not decided yet. I was just wondering what the best way to do this was. I am assuming it is not recommend to spray the paint directly on the wheel. I have seen a few places where people recommend spraying the wheel with some PlestiDip material (don't quote me on that name, correct me if I'm wrong).
I'm assuming people have done this, what are your recommended methods and where the results what you expected?
Hi,
The best and most effective way to go about things is to have a professional quality refurbishment done by a specialist. They'll have the right procedures and capabilities to strip the wheel of all existing paint and corrosion, fix any bends and kerb rash and then either paint or powder coat the wheel in the colour you choose. The end result is a job that is correct and will last a good while, even longer if you choose powdercoat.
You can DIY and use various chemicals etc to remove the existing paint, then try to sand out any kerb rash, then prep for paint and then finally paint. It'll be time consuming, tedious and messy at best! The results will be however good your paint skills are and depending which quality paints you use, you might get something that lasts a good while, or you perhaps won't.
The Plastidip stuff is a coating you could use if the wheels are in relatively decent condition. It is removeable by peeling off as well. It's not really 'meant' for use on road wheels as relatively quickly it'll get stonechipped for which you can just spray more plastidip on. So perhaps for running over winter it could be a good idea, else perhaps not.
I'd say a professional job every time.
Cheers, Dennis!
