Formula One could force its fastest cars to start from the middle of the grid to improve racing.
The reverse-grid proposal is expected to be made by F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone in a meeting between series stakeholders in Geneva on Tuesday, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said on Monday.
The top qualifiers would be dropped on the grid to keep them from pulling away early, in a bid to try to make F1 more attractive to fans and television audiences. The changes could be in effect as early as 2017 if an agreement is reached.
Since we're talking about liveries, I came across this, although obviously not real, still kind of a cool rendering.
90's era design.
It's a Jordan 192.

Looks like there might be some changes to qualifying, not quite as dramatic as was rumored as a proposal.

An outline proposal for the elimination qualifying was discussed.
Q1
-16 minutes duration;
- After 7 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated;
- Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;
- 7 drivers eliminated, 15 progress to Q2.
Q2
- 15 minutes duration;
- After 6 minutes, slowest driver eliminated;
- Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;
- 7 drivers eliminated, 8 progress to Q3.
Q3
- 14 minutes;
- After 5 minutes, slowest driver eliminated;
- Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag;
- 2 drivers left in final 1 minute 30 seconds.
I like it but I think it's going to mess with the Team's tire choice. Ultra softs are going to be required for most of the GPs but we'll never see them in the race.
I hope it doesn't turn the ultra soft into a quali only tire.
I can't see how this proposed change in Qualifying can work at all...
The top teams have 7/6/5 minutes to set a time. Then they go back to their pits.
They only go out when the times they calculate need to be upped. So, IMO, it'll be a race on ultra softs - started by the back markers who'll gain .8 to 1.5 on the ultras, thereby creating a rush to set better times for the rest of the teams.
I think it's pretty reasonable. Definitely beats when teams choose to save tires and just set sector times in Q3. The top two drivers going head to head for pole for 1:30 sounds pretty great too.
I think this may also give more space and reduce traffic for top teams to make the best runs too.
Let's move the discussion to the Barcelona test thread (and after that to each successive race thread). Getting confusing having two simultaneous conversations.
