    Original 4 speed

Hi, I'm contemplating converting my e9 auto into a 4 speed manual. I'm not planning on racing my car but more enjoying it on the weekends through the hills.

Is the original ZF 4 speed manual box suited well to the 3.0?

Is it as simple as finding a good manual e3 and exchanging the gearbox, clutch, pedals out of it into the e9?

The drive shaft may need its length altered. You may need to fabricate a strap plate to run under the gearbox and pin it to the floor.

Why not a 5 speed? The CSL did come out with a 5 speed getrag (dogleg). The 5 speed overdrive and the 5 speed out of the M5/M6 should also fit. Assuming you have a correct M30B30 in your car all of the bell housings on the 3 gearboxes I just mentioned should mate up perfectly. As long as they came off of and M30 or S38 engine and not an M20.

If it's long cruises and warping through the hills, the 5 speed overdrive box let's you cruise along at low rpm and high speed on highways and then dart through the hills.

Cheers and Yes, you are right. I'll start looking around for a 5 speed. There is an e3 3.0 Si which is about to be parted and it seemed like a simple process to get the relevant parts. I think it's the peddle box only that I will need and I'll look around separately for the 5 speed. Is there anything else I should get off the e3 for the conversion?
    Thanks again

So I have come across a getrag 260 5 speed which came out of a 1987/88 e28 528i and wanted to know if this is the correct gearbox for my manual conversion for my e9

It will work. Since the you have a m30 and the e28 535i had a m30.

The non-PRNDL cluster would be nice
