My battery died on my 2007 BMW 328i and now it won't start

My bmw won't start, the battery died the other day and it would not start when I got it jumped. I was told by the dealership that it needs to have the computer reset. Is there a certain way to reset it or a alarm code I have to enter?

Modern BMWs need to have the new battery "registered" with the engine management computer (ECU). The reason is the alternator charges a new battery differently than an old battery, or so I've read. I'd find a good indy shop that works on BMWs only and have the shop register the new battery.

Did you connect the jumper cables whilst paying attention to polarity?

I'm using the same old battery to start it.

I put positive red + on the red terminal and negative - to the body.

If the battery was completely dead your average small gauge cheapo jumper cables won't carry enough amperage to start the engine immediately. You'll have to leave them connected with the power supply vehicle at a high idle for several minutes for the battery to have a sufficient charge to turn it over.

Im using a 400 amp booster pack to jump it. So i charged my booster pack all night because it died, and i went to go try to start it this afternoon and i locked the doors mistakenly and now the battery is completely dead and the doors wont unlock. So now i need to figure out how to unlock the doors.

    Ah yes... the remote thingy.

Have the car towed to the dealer and ask for them to call you when its fixed. I see no other course of action for you.

I'd be very surprised if it needed to be coded to start even after a dead battery. Once you replace the battery it will need to be coded, but per my understanding - until it is coded it will simply not charge properly. It should still start and run.

Jump it with more juice and use the underhood terminals. I've had to put two cars to my BMWs to jump them in the past especially if the battery is completely toast. Get the battery replaced ASAP and coded in properly

Lol... I your car doesn't start something new happened before the new battery was installed.... Take it to a shop as stated above. I don't see a reset doing anything for you.

I'm not using a new battery I'm using the old one. I'm trying to jump it but the engine won't turn or nothing, it just clicks then cuts off.

If your engine explodes, do you not think you need a new engine because the explosion was the first time you had a problem with the engine?

OP replace the battery. Not every car will experience a gradual decline in battery. Sometimes when the die, they are completely toast and cant be jumped. That happened to my dad's 5 series a couple years ago. Replace it, head to the dealer or indy, get it coded and move on.

Um, your battery is more than 7 years old, and you don't think you need a new one? What makes you think this?

Either jump it with more power to start it or get a new battery. If you get a new battery get it coded in. If you get a new battery and it doesn't start something else is wrong in the starting system

Yes... because driving a 15 year old 5 series makes me rich? Lord knows I don't take it to the dealer... or anywhere else for that matter.. because my mechanical competence renders me fully capable of fixing or doing most anything.

You cannot seem to handle changing a battery, any problems otherwise are certainly out of your league.... thus the suggestion is a serious one. Dead batteries, especially ones with bad cells, have very high internal resistance which can thwart starting attempts even with a jump.

Since NO OTHER PROBLEMS on your car can be diagnosed until there is a GOOD hot battery in it CHANGE THE DAMN BATTERY and go from there.

Or you know... tow it somewhere and have them call you when they fix it.
