    Please help

We have a bmw 320d e46 touring, and its been off the road now for 3 weeks. We have replaced battery with a brand new one, we have replaced the in tank fuel pump, it has been on the diagnostics and the only thing it brought up was the in tank pump so this was changed and the car still won't work.
We can bump it and it goes, we can jump start it and it goes both soundly and without fault but as soon as it's turned off it won't start. The AA bloke and the diagnostics bloke both said the car itself is in sound condition and it is showing nothing that would stop it running. Seriously at a loss as dont know what else to do

Take it to a shop that specializes in BMWs and have them look at it.

when you say it wont start, do you mean it will turn over but wont run, or do you mean the motor will not turn over at all?

Crankshaft position sensor is dirty or damaged.

Bmw want 130 per hour to find the fault. The car is fine it drives fine like I said if bumped or jumped runs as though nothing wrong with it. Soon as you stop and turn the key in the ignition it turns and turns and turns but won't fire up. We've done miles and miles in it and it running fine but it's just when it's still. A dde symbol keeps Coming up but then goes, the AA bloke checked the whole car said it's mint. But obviously not cuz it won't run.

If you run a code scanner through OBD2. Do you get any P codes?

Surely if it was the crankshaft broken the car wouldn't work at all? It won't fire up with a key but it will run if jump started or bumped

I definitely don't know enough about the M47 engine to give you a certain diagnosis, and most people on this forum are US-based and in a similar situation, as they did not sell those diesels here.

If the engine runs fine once started, but cranks and does not fire, it means that the engine is not getting any fuel while cranking.

I see on other posts that the DDE light comes on briefly for others when their glow plugs go out. Have you ever serviced your glow plugs or glow plug relay? If something is wrong there, the computer may send a "no-go" signal to the fuel injectors during cranking.

Again, I am not an expert by any means, this is just my best guess.

It's nothing wrong with the crankshaft per se. the crankshaft position sensor is a sensor that will detect how far along the rotation it is, and that sensor controls spark and fuel. I've had the same problem in the past, with exactly the same symptoms. Turns out there was a bit of grease on the sensor that threw off the readings.
