2002 X5 Mystery Wiper Activity

I have a 02 X5 4.4 sport package. When I apply the brake the rear wiper will cycle. Just once per.
At high speeds it is a rare occurance, but in stop and go slow speed traffic it becomes fairly regular.
Rather annoying and disconcerting to say the least. Any ideas???

The wiring in the harness that goes to the hatch is damaged. The brake light and wiper wiring are shorting out on each other. Pull back the rubber boot covering the wiring where it goes from the body to the hatch and you should be able to see the broken wires.

Thanks for the tip.. I pull the boot but couldnt see anything obvious. I did isolate the brake and taillight wires and repositioned them in the bundle. So far so good.
I still have an issue where I start the engine and the rear wiper cycles once. Ghost in the machine
