Newb needs help with INPA & E39... WHAT CABLE TO USE?!

I've been trying to troubleshoot my DSC light and kept getting a SYS-0012 error when I try and read the codes on the ABS module on my 2000 E39. After doing more reading on here, I'm thoroughly confused as to what cable I need to read the codes from the ABS module. I am using the K+DCAN cable with the 20 pin adapter. It looks like I would need to solder pins 7-8 together? Or do I need to get a VAG com cable and solder 7-8 together?

you need an ADS cable with a serial port connection.

The ABS modules on those cars is not OBD2, so no OBD2 cable is going to read it.

Ok, now I'm more confused. According to this thread: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=561237

Note that E39s (built from 1998 onward), do NOT use the ADS interface!
Older E39s may have a similar 20-pin round pacman connector; but it's 'not' a round ADS interface; it's a round OBD interface.
The round ADS interface uses pin 15 (RXD), which was phased out in 1996.
None of the E39's should need an ADS interface, but if you have any doubt, check the voltage at pin 15 of your round pacman connector; if you see about 11v you need the round ADS interface. If not you need the round OBD interface.

That thread says I need to use a K-line for the E39.

All e39's (and e53, same thing) I've scanned, whether obd port or 20pin port were with the FTDI chip VAGCOM cable (KKL) with bridged pins 7&8.
    INPA K+DCAN wouldn't do it.

I had no problems using K-Dcan on my E39 2002, has no 20 pin, only 16, do diagnostics, once coded ZKE.

its partially true, the round plug serves both ADS and OBD depending on the cable plugged into it(for convenience when used with high end diagnostic equipment that can switch back and forth automatically as needed). ADS was only partially phased out in 1996 and not fully phased out until ~2001. You need BOTH a K-line(aka OBD2) and an ADS cable to read all the modules on the early e39. Checking for voltage at pin 15 with the key on will indeed tell you if you need ADS.

Yes, your car is full OBD2. BMW removed the round plug when they finally got rid of ADS completely around 2001.

I'm not sure how true this is that you can buy the inpa or vagcom cable and use it to read all the interfaces. I have spent a ton of time and effort on my installs and I can only manage to reach the engine and tranny programs.

I keep getting the ifh-0009 error on the other interfaces.

have you soldered pins 7 and 8 together?

Your vagcom KKL cable needs pins 7&8 soldered together for e39 to read all modules. Do not solder the INPA DCAN cable's pins.

So I sorted this out. Both the DCAN and VAG COM cables work. The issue was the ABS module itself. I sent it to ASI to have it repaired, and it turns out it was unrepairable.
