I have a m50 bored to 87mm with 3.2 crank eagle rods 8.5.1 pistons intake cam s52 exhaust cam
I have a 87mm cutring headgasket on it. After I fit up the engine and set the timing and rotating it a few times I feel the pistons touching something either the valve or the cutring shifted.
Im actually sure its not valve touching pistons. I turned the engine on each cylinder till the lobe opens valve all intake valves are touching and none of the exhaust are touching. I already clayed the motor and the intake has .120 clearance.
When i check each cylinder the piston doesnt have tobe tdc and the valve is touching what I think is the cutring itself. I removed the clyinder head to see whats going on. Only thing I can come up with so far is the ring shifted slightly enuff for it to touch the intake valve. When I installed the head the motor was out and I tried to install as straight up

Kinda confused cause the cutring itself is bigger than the piston. Only thing that makes sense to me is the cutrings shifted but how does the valve touch the ring. Or is there something else that somebody can suggest
So the ring shifted just enuff to touch the ring

They don't have anywhere to move in their bore, but they could pop out of that seat when the head is put down.
Sure they can the engine wasnt exactly straight up but as straight as I could get. They have a very small of movement with the gasket cause they are so exact but just enuff. Cyl 6 and cyl 5 are ok 4 3 2 1 arent. I will slot the gasket right by the front dowel to carry it up that small amount.
Do the e36 m50s have a bolt on windage tray? The e34s do, i put the m50 windage tray on my m52 and it interfered with the crank. I could feel it when i turned the motor over by hand but didn't realize what it was right away.
Are you planning to get that head resurfaced ? If you don't those cut rings will just slide back into the grooves they created and those grooves are in the wrong place as you already found out.
