Expensive? For what they do, and how they do it, it is actually quite a value.

Driveshaftspecialist list three types of BMW drive shafts - which one is ours - types 1, 2 or 3? And are the non-///M ones different from the ///M ones?

I got mine from DSS, and it was an awesome deal! I paid $378, plus an $85 core charge. It comes with a return shipping label, so all you need to do is put your old one in the box and ship it back! So, for $378 my car's drivetrain is silky smooth again!

    Do it!!!

It all depends on the specific driveshaft. As Damomite said, the price includes return shipping, and the shipping box is re-used. So, that part is easy. Usually, they will ask you for the VIN to help determine the correct driveshaft. On E36 M3s some driveshafts have rear CV joints and others have regular u-joints, and that drives the price. When ordering from them, they will ask those questions. Even if one has done an engine swap (M52 into an E30) or gearbox change (Auto to manual), they will work with you on the core and matching the proper shaft.

My experience has been that if I order before noon central, I will have a driveshaft in 3-4 working days (I am in KC, Mo.), and they know what they have on the shelf or what has to be prepped to ship. Just great people. Worth EVERY dime.

Sounds like from your experience they're a class act - such is always nice to encounter.

W/re Z3 non-///M driveshafts: I suspect for most they're using similar configurations and hence driveshafts... as such, wondering what they're charging vs DSS... or, maybe since they're doing basically the same work, their prices are basically the same.

True. But it's doubtful any of US have the price sheet !!!

Someone has already indicated he got a DSS unit for $378. I am quite sure his was a double u-joint driveshaft. Also, it was mentioned that a u-joint/CV-joint driveshaft is about $428. On E36/46 based cars, that pretty much covers the pricing. Further, those prices include shipping both ways.

DSS does have online prices (and they're easy to find)... it's PTI that doesn't (or at least in looking through most of their web pages don't find such).

I bought a driveshaft from them last summer. No issues. I definitely recommend them.

Powertrain Industries send their stuff out and carry a one year warranty. The turn around time is 7 days and requires you to send your own driveshaft out. Pricing for my 2.8L manual trans Z3 was 375 with shipping included.

Their inventory must fluctuate, base on the new AND old driveshafts in post #6...

This is exactly why Driveshaft Specialist is such a great deal. Order a driveshaft, 2-4 days later it shows up, and you are on the road. P.I. has 7 day turn around, 2-4 days each way, and the same pricing. DSS wins !!!

...how would that work? It sounds like you would have to source a box, pay for the initial shipping to them, and have the car off the road for over a week?

Just order from Driveshaft Specialist already!

It really sounds like that's the answer... though wonder how they manage to always have a driveshaft waiting to send you - are they really that big? ... but that's I guess their "problem"... as long as I call, order, a couple days later it shows up, I swap it for the old one, ship the old one back, and I only have the Z off the road for a couple hours... almost sounds painless. :-)
