I am in the processing of restoring, with an original feel, my 91 M5. I am replacing the head unit, stock amp through the bypass and front speakers with 5.25 components. I would like to take a consensus on the best OEM style solution for a sub, being a self-contained unit, IP woofer in the rear deck or 6.5" subs in the front.

So, please post your indication of what provides the best sub function and solution from the following list:
I ran pioneer D series components front and rear. 5.25 and a pioneer champion series 1000w rms sub in the trunk. I'm running 4 crossovers and two amps all Mounted on the rear trunk panel. I would mount a sub on the rear parcel shelf. And not up front

So option 1
I'm curious to see how those little JL subs do. What 2.5" speakers are you planning on using? Or are you reusing the existing speaker?

the 2.5 are hard to find. I have found some generics at parts express and some discontinued models on eBay from Boston Acoustics.
My thought going that route is that a 6.5 sub, rather than woofer in the kick would fill in the needed lower freq. by crossing it over lower by supplementing the mids with the 2.5" which you would normally remove in a component. The problem I see with the Tang Band is that they are not free air and require a small 0.25 cu ft enclosure which means they would have to be mounted in a small box under the rear deck that ports through the deck cover.
I didn't vote seeing how I have no direct experience with any of those companies. I did however install Alpine Type-R's in my old Z seven years ago, and I was super impressed with those.
Good luck!
