    Swapping Wheels between E38s

I have a 2000 740iL and I recently purchased a 2001 740iL Sport. I am considering swapping the wheels and tires. The 01 Sport has staggered M-Pars and the 00 has the regular 16 inch wheels. My question is would it affect anything negatively to do the swap. As I understand the 01 iL sport has minor elements of the Sport package, but not nearly as much as a 740i Sport. So, would it screw up the suspension dynamics/geometry to put the 16 tires/wheels on the 01 and put the staggered 18 in wheels/tires on the 00 non sport?

I'm not selling the M-Pars. I finally have a car with them and they are the real ones, not knock-offs. I'm keeping them. What I was wondering is if I decide the sell the 01 Sport would it make any difference if I put the m-pars on the non sport 00 740iL and put the basketweave wheels/tires on the 01 Sport.

Your '01 sport is worth a lot less without the Mpars and even less with baskets.....

No. I really wanted the 01 Sport and I'm 99% sure I am going to keep it instead of my 00 740iL. There are two things I don't really like about the 01 Sport, it rides A LOT firmer than my 2000 and it is not as quiet. My 00 740iL has the security glass and steel sunroof and evidently they make a HUGE difference in the noise/sound dampening. But, the 01 has the M-Pars which I love AND it has HALF as many miles as the other one and the 01 is really in exceptional condition.

It is impossible for 2000 e38 having metal sunroof,
only if someone put it from older model

    - - - Updated - - -

Glasses on 740's are the same, only if your 2000 have double glazed glasses, which is very rear
it was standard for 750il only

Lol you're comparing 15 year old cars... The tires might be more worn, about the only thing that would affect noise.

Sorry you are mistaken, a metal sunroof was an option on 2000 E38. The security glass is the double thick windows. Yes, it is rare, but mine has them.

i think the Security glass is making the difference. There is zero wind noise in the 00.

There are late model e38s with metal sunroofs. They are certainly rare.

The only e38 I have ever seen with a metal sunroof was a 97 750iL.

The security glass is actually the double pane glass.

It will not stop bullets. It will stop the sound of gunfire. Unless the target is the window.

    This is security glass:

I don't know what is called, but it has two panes of glass with a coating in between. I know there is are two layers because on a couple of small spots, there is some separation between the two layers. I'm not suggesting it is the bulletproof stuff from the protection model.

    Here is a better comparison:

the window on my 2000 740iL:

And here is the window on my 01 740iL:

By "security" OP means "break-resistant security glass", which is indeed what it was called and an option on all E38s.
It is not intended to be bulletproof, just to deter thieves and the like who might come at windows with hand tools.
It is the same thickness as the "insulated double-glazing" that some here seem to be mistaking it for, but OP's pic shows the inside black border is shiny, whereas insulated double glazing's black border is matte.

Thank you for clearing that up. I thought it was called security glass. I bought the car from the original owner and he said he ordered it with the security glass and steel sunroof. He was a big time lawyer in St. Louis and he said he liked the extra protection.

Metal sunroof was standard option on e38 till 08/97, then glass sunroof came as an special order,
glass sunroof became as standard option with facelifted sevens at the end of 98, metal sunroof not available anymore since then,
sorry to tell you, but previous owner hide something from you
FYI-protection package never came with sunroof

AFAIK steel sunroof was only standard on 1995 models, and glass moonroof standard after that.
I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to order a steel sunroof if you are ordering a car. US market was pretty restricted but that's an easy order.
OP never claimed anything about a protection package, just the security glass package which was a real option available in the US throughout production.

Dude you don't know what you are talking about in this case. It was ordered with a steel sunroof.

Take a look at this. It shows option packages. The security glass (break resistant glass) AND Metal sunroof was offered as an option package. It cost $2600.

Seriously? You have been arguing the whole time that it is, in your own words, IMPOSSIBLE, for a 2000 E38 to have a metal sunroof. Clearly, security glass and a metal sunroof was an option package. My car has it and the original owner ordered it that way.
