hard rear clunk when fast shifting

hi, i recently bought a 85' bmw 535i.. and im having a hard clunk from the rear end when giving the driveline immediate load, such as "dropping the clutch" .. it happens through all gears, including when starting in reverse.
the harder the load (harder i shift and accelerate), the louder the clunk, and it seems to give the whole car a jolt as it happens.
i can avoid it by releasing the clutch slowly, and easing through the gears...but thats no fun /:
i like my new car, and want to drive it the way it should be driven c: hard

SO, i am aware that my rear u joint needs to be replaced, and will do that soon.

BUT, i have a related problem and a question.

while cornering down a windy road the inersha causes my rear end to shifting to the outside of the corner quite drastically. at first i thought my seat was loose, but it is in the rear end...

could these symptoms be related?? is there some sort of a mount back there that may be broken, that could cause both of these problems.?.. sorry for the long post just trying to be thorough .. thanks !

p.s. ill take any advice on the clunk and especially on why the rear end would shift please. thanks

also, when the rear end moves side to side, there is no sound or clunk. it more just flops or kind teeters over

On the E-28's the dog bones like to make noise. Also your main bushing can be on their way out, as 30 years of driving have turned them to mush.

#12 is the pitman arm aka dog bone
    #2 is the main mount

I would get a competent mechanic to raise the car and see what else maybe loose under there, as any piece can be suspect. I had replaced every piece of rubber on my old E-28 years ago and I went with OEM stuff mostly.

Yeah, that sounds a lot like the subframe mountings are trashed -- and that means the rear end is steering the car. Don't drive it, or you may crash, and/or rip the entire back end out of the car.

It is not the pitman arms -- although they will certainly be trashed. (I actually had to remove mine from my E28 race car, because I had exceeded the angles they could achieve. There was no ill effect. Certainly, I replace them every couple of years on my M5, but I'm not really sure why.)

Also note that if the u-joint in the driveshaft is loose/bad, you need a remanufactured driveshaft, not a u-joint.
