    NBT/CIC/CCC retrofit in E39/E38/E53

    Hey guys,

So, some of us have been having a discussion on doing this over on m5board.com (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...rofit-e39.html), but I thought I'd open it up to you guys as well since I've finally found an off-the-shelf adapter that makes this retrofit as easy as making a screen bezel, cutting a whole in the center console trim, and running a display extension cord to the trunk. What I found was this: http://carsystems.com.ua/bmw-product...fit-adapter-en, which translates all the NBT (Next Best Thing - successor to CIC 2012+) CAN messages to IBUS and vice-versa. This allows full integration into our older cars including the car diagnostics and seat, climate controls, etc. It costs 400 Euros + 12 Euros for shipping to the US, but they said that if there are several of us that want them, they can make them at a discount. They are all made to order and they have a 12 day lead time on them. The 8.8" lcd screen fits within the frame that surrounds our widescreen nav, though it might need a bit of filling of holes and such. Keep in mind that once you have the main system working, you can add any of the add-on components from the newer cars and connect them using the MOST bus. Oh, and this adapter treats the DSP amplifier as the TOP-HIFI used in the newer cars.

They also have an adapter that works with the CIC system, but I don't know how much it costs.

Pretty cool to have the 2012+ system running in our cars that go back as far as 1994

This seems like an awesome mod. Besides a gps antenna which I do have do you need the old factory gps wiring in place to make this fly? I do not have that.

Idrive controller won't fit next to shifter. Gotta figure something out.

I was thinking in the little storage box under the armrest. It would be sideways though.

The iDrive unit can be disassembled and with some creative ideas, made to blend well. (I've taken one apart and measured things, while doing mine).

This is my center console with a SpaceNavigator, not an iDrive knob, but they are similar.

You could cut into the snifter plate. May not look bad.

I love the look and feel of the space navigator. Not sure if it will integrate with the nbt. The first generation control would fit. But you would lose the quick buttons. Maybe you could cut into snifter plate slightly

After sitting in my car, I think I'm gonna put the idrive controller where the phone is at.

With the armrest extended, its feels more natural and easier to grab than if it was by the shifter or in the ashtray.

We should also be able to use an Arduino Uno to convert the Space Navigator to CAN commands. You should also be able to make other kinds of buttons that do the other functions and wire them to the Arduino so they send the proper CAN commands.

Just curious, can you control the radio and hvac controls from the nbt? On my idrive in my m the hvac controls are redundant. Used from the idrive or the knobs on the hvac. With the retrofit is it similar? Can I use the hvac panel and the idrive menu?

Sitting in my car again, plotting on this idrive controller placement. Thinking about cutting out my wood console like so, adding a leather panel housing the idrive controller (in its proper vertical position) and the hazard/lock buttons. What you guys think?

Would be nice to cut it the way like you mark it and then make a wooden plate to place it in
it can help to keep it look whole, then place iDrive right forwards and place hazard and door lock buttons next to it on the right
you can also cut them through right by shifter tho
