Given that smaller, DI turbo engines seem to be the way of the future, I think sound "simulation" is here to stay. The "real" sound that these engines produce is not great. Even F1 has concluded that it is an issue. Think of the opportunity to tune the sound via aftermarket mods! Plugging into a flash drive, or OBD-II port is a lot easier than changing exhausts, and hopefully a lot cheaper as well. It needs to be done with a good enough sound system and software to make it credible, though. I'm not impressed with the implementation in my MKVI GTI, but I've heard overwhelmingly positive feedback on the new M3/M4 setup.

Thinking about it reminds me of a concert performance. When you go see a band they're gonna be using a microphone and speakers, but you still consider it a live performance. As long as nothing is done to the sound, like enhancements (which makes one think Ozzy Osbourne can sing), I suppose it's fine.
And if you're an Opera buff, just remove the sound insulation.
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.
Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.
Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?
I know, but I guess I don't understand people buying a sports car not enjoying the sound of an engine. For me those two things are pretty much connected.
I'm not talking deafening noise all over the place, but just not that insulated that you won't hear it inside the cabin. Seems a bit overdone.
I think its pathetic they use the audio system to make exhaust sounds

Best to tune the EXHAUST not the equalizer IMO.....
I agree. I would want more power, not a more powerful sound.
this is what BMW has come to:
except this ^ sound is real...
People who think the idea is dumb obviously haven't ridden in the i8. That car sounds awesome. Even though it's practically silent.
