    4.8is to n62tu swap question

Just got an 04 4.8is that ran but I knew had something wrong. It was cheap so I tore into it. Turns out it dropped number 7 exhaust valve and ended up cracking the block. So the engine is junk and needs replaced. Obviously n62b48s are not growing on trees so I need some options. I found a low mileage n62b48tu from a 750 for a decent price. I'm not overly concerned about getting the engine running more than going in. I will be swapping all of the parts off the current engine like oil pan, intake and wiring harness. Just need to make sure I can get the mounting brackets on the block. I've been searching around all night but haven't found anything about people installing non e53 engines into an e53, at least in respect to the n62. Just seeing if anyone out there has any experience with this.

I've had a lot of these engines apart and out of cars, they all look identical to me. My other option is to replace it with a 4.4 n62 I found from an x5. But then it's not really a 4.8is anymore.

I am pretty sure the engine block is the same,at least all mounting points.Same as all M54s are the same and can be swapped from one model to another.TU has a little bit different engine management, but you should be able to swap the harness and sensors for your original ones.

I checked another 7 to make sure the block was drilled and tapped. Oil pan gaskets are the same as well. Potentially the cylinder heads all are not drilled and tapped in the same locations from the 7 to the x5 for exhaust manifolds. Some are opposite of what is there, I guess bmw thought it would be easier to access some of the nuts by placing them in different locations. I know the holes can be added though (i experimented with my junk cylinder head).

I am anticipating that they might be off but am going to have the correct holes drilled and tapped so the x5 manifolds will bolt to the heads. Other than that I think everything will work. Engine is on its way so I will find out soon.

Let me tell ya, I've been stressing over this stupid thing! What I thought was going to be a quick headgasket turned into a nightmare. I've been through the NG engine update book and found that most of what made the n62b48 in the e53 went into what they developed for the tu motor. I'll get this thing running one way or another and make sure it's still got a 4.8 liter for a power plant.

Thought I would update this. I have this 750 engine sitting in and running in my e53!

I have changed the oil pump, oil pan, motor mounts, alternator bracket and intake manifold. Also I had to drill and tap all 16 exhaust manifold stud holes to fit the x5 exhaust manifolds. Each port was drilled opposite for what I needed but I was able to finish it up last Monday.

Very well done, is that the engine cover from the e65 or from the e53? I'm assuming there are no differences in the engine/performance.

Those covers are from the x5. The 4.8 was rated at 355hp where the 750 was 360. E70 x5 4.8 is also 355 hp and I'm guessing since the exhaust is different and slightly shorter that is where the 5 hp difference is. It is a good running engine though. Internally they are almost the same I think.
