    Looks like its done...

My car has had the cel light on and being that im in California, that won't pass the strict smog process. So I took it to a mechanic to find the codes. He found an air leak from the intake. Well he takes off the intake and found metal shavings inside. Took of the osv and found metal shavings inside. Drained the oil, took out the oil pan and found metal shavings in the pan and the oil. I just had the oil changed 2 weeks ago and didn't notice any metal. We would have to take apart the engine to look if there's any metal inside. He advised me not to put any more money into it. My smog due date is the 26th of this month. It was not a good day yesterday; might be time to let her go. Anyone Cate to chime in as to how metal shavings would end up inside the intake and osv? It has 235,xxx miles. Built date: 8/96.

Thats what i was thinking. Im going to either junk it or sell it as a parts car. I really dont have time to take everything apart to part it out. Very sad day for me.

Don't worry too much. We have our ups and downs with these cars. Sometimes you get a good one and sometimes even a bad one or one that has good potential but needs some tlc.

Look at it this way. If you at least make the effort of parting it out you can recoup some of the cost and put that towards a nice one. Goodluck.

Tyvm! It ran beautiful. I never expected for it to come to this. It's almost like finding out a loved one is sick or even passed away. Never knew how much I would connect with my E38. I know its worth more than im letting it go for just in parts alone. However, I don't have the time as i would like to be able to part it out. I will take out what I can and sell it. For example 2 full size spares with brand new tires, complete tool kit, jack, foot rests, spare transmission, style 95 wheels, mpars etc... I will be back in another bmw hopefully in an E38.

You'd need an engine replacement to fix that. You can get an M62 for less than a grand.. or even lower if you're lucky if you really want to save your car.

Sorry to hear the news. Good luck

That was my gut feeling. I would need extra time and effort on my part which is hard right now cause of life, family, and more life. I'm eyeing an Imola red 2000 m5 my coworker wants me to buy so I will be back in the bimmer wagon once again. I joined this forum about 7 years ago because I fell in love with the E38. So my gut feeling is I will own one again. I managed to get a few more interior parts so I will be looking to post some in the clasifieds section. Im still bummed out. Only thing keeping me up is Giants winning. Onwards and upwards!!

The M5 interior is a bit better than the 740's, and is a benchmark for today's sports sedans. If you can, go for it! Keep in mind, it is a newer motor with double vanos, so maintenance costs will be a bit higher.
