I just bought a 2001 Z3 Coupe and both windows go down almost all the way but not quite. Stay up about an inch? Both windows doing the same thing. I also have a 2001 Z3 Convertible and dont have this issue. Is this standard on the Coupes?
Welcome to Coupe ownership
Because the roofline is a bit higher and the car was sort of an "afterthought," the windows do not go down all the way in the Coupes, whereas the roadster roofline is a little bit lower so they retract completely.
Oh and, pics!!! What kind did you get? S54? 3.0?

Yes, its a 2001 3.0 i got a pretty amazing deal! Heres both The Z's i currently own. Realllly want another M soon.
nice! you're in CT?
No, i live in Annapolis MD near DC/Baltimore. Moving to San Diego soon!
aw man, i got excited. made a post earlier trying to track down local New England coupes
WOW. Haven't seen one of these threads in a decade.
You know, it's kind of bogus that they wouldn't fit proper widows. Or make the roofline fit the roadster glass. Bad call, they really should go down flush for those of us who stick the elbow out the window.
Stuff. I got stuff.
I still put my arm out the window, and it hasn't bothered me yet.
The MGBGT was exactly the same way (compared to the rdstr) except they added an aluminum trim to the top of the door to hide the glass.
It really isn't a thing, and I'm sure there's plenty of other nits to pick with more substance.

This question is definitely a FAQ. I'm pretty sure I remember earlier threads (in fact, I think I myself asked this question even earlier), but here's the earliest I could easily find, from over 15 years ago: http://forum.roadfly.com/threads/336...l-the-way-down

In spain there was a coupe that the windows go down completly down. The owner bought it like that (2º hand) and did not let me investigate why.
So it is possible to "fix" it.
In theory if the channel will go up high enough one could remove the appropriate amount of glass from the bottom of the sheet to allow it to sit flush at the low position. This of course assumes the mechanisms at play will allow the unit to still travel high enough to seat at the top channel.
Thanks op, you just crossed off one of my to do items on the list.....
I was going to take the door apart and investigate this issue.
I always wondered if you could cut out and move a "stopper" at the bottom of the window regulator... I was afraid this may cause the glass to come out hte bottom of the door, but I may investigate this.
I have a few extra roadster doors, if anyone has a spare coupe window glass I may be interested in buying it so I can test this. Its not so much that the glass not closing bothers me, its just that making it close all the way would just be so much better.

This is my feeling exactly.
