I'm just relieved that it's something this minor and not some form of serious engine wear, VANOS failure, etcetera.
Can anybody ID this hose? I do not want to buy generic Kragen/O'Reilly hose even though I could probably get away with it.

I'm reasonably certain that its a portion of the PCV... Is it really necessary/advisable to replace the whole system? or is this site just trying to gouge me?

Ok it's not a part of the PCV... this hose runs back to that compartment at the top left of the engine bay... This hose was basically the consistency of thick peanut butter at the spot where it separated...

My best guess based off my S52 experience is that it is part of the secondary air system. A large electric pump sectioned off in the rear-left part of the engine bay injects fresh air into the exhaust stream to aid emissions. Or so I've assumed.

Possible break down from oil leak at the head gasket, destroying the rubber? Silicone tubing would be a good candidate for that location.
Yep that is definitely it. Thank you!

that would have to be a fairly violent oil leak, but anything is possible I guess. OEM hose will probably run about the same as a silicone hose so that is an option.

a bloody core charge on a hose? what the...
Yeah for $45 I'm just gonna take some measurements and order a tasteful logo-free black silicone hose.

I'm reading that silicone might actually not be happy when exposed to oil...

Alright 10 bucks done deal

Hopefully it won't look too out of place.
Silicone hoses also tend to collapse easily. Not a great idea.

$40 & no core charge.
I haven't pulled the trigger at McMaster yet so I'll think about it.

Thanks to some browbeating by people on another message board I'm going to do the right thing and get the $45 OEM hose with a bloody core charge... Even though it is going to kill every part of me that has ever led me to make a common sense/logical decision... It'll look and perform exactly as well as this 136,000 mile hose did exactly as BMW intended... Still, "ugh."
There isn't a core charge. Realoem.com shows that on a bunch of non rebuidable parts and nobody knows why.
