before i flew out to pick up my car, i searched and read alot of threads on fuel milage. mainly on the s52's, what the tank capacity is, average mpgs, reserve capacity, etc. i firgured about 240-250 a tank for the drive, and since i was unfamiliar with the car i was leary about when the reserve light came on, how much further i could go, so i never let it get that low. i was really surprised by getting 265 miles in 3/4 of a tank continuously. i'm sure i could have gotten over 300 miles easily. has anyone else seen these mpgs running 80mph?
From my build thread (S52 motor):
The denominator in the "Raw" calculation represents how many full tanks of fuel so far that I've used to calculate the averages. As of this posting, you'll see I've consumed 25 full tanks of fuel in the process of calculating my city economy.

damn. i was way off lol. seems like the norm. nice chart.
Don't be fooled by the petrol gauge. It's just there to fill a space on the dash, not to provide useful information!
other informations are tyres size and type of roads done (city, motorway...)
my record - 1.9 16v (M44), 17" wheels, mixed roads: 670 km(416miles) from the full tank to the deeepest (deeeepest deeeepest...with a petrol tank in the car ) petrol gauge red light on

miss ZUKU!
its all stock setup, tires and wheels. i must have misread something earlier about 240-250 per tank. 416 is unreal!
The Z3 fuel tank holds 13.5 US Gallons, so that's only 30.8MPG. That's pretty normal for a 1.9, especially on a cruise. Admittedly that is probably pushing the tank to it's limit.
My average fuel consumption (a measured and calculated figure) on my 1.9 is 35mpg - that's based on Imperial Gallons rather than US Gallons, but that converts to around 29MPG in US Gallons, and that's driving 'spiritedly'
Conditions play such a large role. The trip to DSS last year we got like 23-24 MPG. Same trip this year we did 30. Same M54 3.0 car, same everything, except last year was 110F, this year was 55F. 25MPG highway out of a stock S52 is fairly normal.

This morning I filled up. I had roughly 1/4 tank left and I went 285 miles. I filled up with 11.27 gallons which gave me 25.2 mpg. My 2000 M Coupe is completely stock.

Am I the only one that thinks the tank is just about empty at 1/4 mark?
The tank is empty at 1/4. I dont' get good fuel econ because I have a right foot condition.
when I fill up at 1/4 I can put 11gal in. Half I can put almost 9.

Lights on and still can never get more than 9 gallons at the pump usually at about 250 miles on the trip.
A drive to Toronto (about 100km) in my moms Honda civic costs around 10-11 bucks (eco-boost on, regular gas), while that same trip in my m coupe costs around $13.50 (using the pricey ultra 94 gas I usually go out of my way to fill up on).
OOOoooOO 94
I get around 225-235 miles until it falls just below the 1/4 mark on the Coupe. It's extremely hard to stay under 70mph around here, plus I'm running the AC.

Let me ask this question differently - in that I thought the tanks were more like 11.5gal: what is the most anyone has put into their tank (US Gallons)?
I average around 22 mpg with my nearly 175K mile S52. I use ethanol free gas; with E10 I get around 20 mpg. I mix city/hwy as my daily commute is around 10 miles freeway and 7 miles city. My right foot is heavy, and I have a personal struggle with operating within local speeding laws. I don't drive like a complete jerk, I just have fun accelerating to the speed limit and perhaps some high speed freeway pulls when conditions seem safe. I have tried to "be good" and then I got 24 mpg with the same commuting. However, I didn't have nearly as much fun getting 24 mpg and I concluded that I get enough enjoyment from judicious lead footing to justify the extra fuel usage.
Wait, are you saying you had a spare container with extra fuel? Also, I didn't know there was a red light after the yellow light? This might inspire me to set a new "personal best" to see how many miles I can get out of a tank and/or how many gallons I can fit in at once.

12.033 gallons on my last fill up happened to be my "personal best" in that regard. I got 265.9 indicated miles before that fill up. Yellow light was on, but not a red light; didn't know the car would do that.
Someone else posted a pic where they got like 12.4 in the tank. I believe Dr Forbes has also posted a picture of the tank not in a car, and the goofy shape pretty well explains why the gauge is not progressive.

0w30.jpgI saw this at the autopart store. Since I've used Mobil one on both of my Bimmers and my Infiniti since I bought them, I decided to give it a try. Previous best for my 1.9L was 30 mpg. At the first fillup after the oil change I calculated 31.3 mpg.
