6 speed swap : the parts

    The shifter...
Of coarse the aluminum shift arm is NLA, however the selector rod 25111222786 is apparently NLA now.
    001 (2).JPG
the difference between E39 and E38 is 15mm.
    001 (2).JPG
    extended shift arm.
part # 25111434181 rubber boot seals the shifter to the tunnel opening.
    The E60 "budget" short shifter
    002 (2).JPG

    Hydraulic lines...
There are 3 pieces. All 3 are still available. 21521164367- from M/C through floor comes with the grommet for the floor.
    21521164711- flex line,
    005 (2).JPG
21521162116 is pretty much the same as a 540

Brake peadal, cheap way is to take your auto pedal and cut it down to the size of a manual brake pedal.
    002.JPG

The hole for hose from brake fluid res to clutch M/C. Use a hammer and a punch, the metal comes out very easy.

Hole for hard line through floor,Covered with a plastic plug. Just about right behind the gas pedal.

The clutch switch for cruise control is part#61318381612, 3pin/blue

I as well did the e60 shifter can't wait to drive it, throws seem very short and precise, thought I was the only one. If you are gonna buy one no reason not to do it. Also learned the hard way that the facelift break pedal is different than prefacelift. Ended up just ordering the correct pedal for 32 bucks.

There are 3 different brake pedals. A car with a build date of 5/99 had a pedal similar to the E39 and my 12/00 has a different one. As long as you get the brake switch bracket that matches the pedal your good.

The autotragic is out! I'm ready to put the 6 speed in. The driveshaft is at the shop being lengthened. I just have to pull the shifter out of the console, do the rear muffler mod, and bolt it all back together.

@007008: Did you have the steptronic auto shifter? If so what are you doing with that and the control module? Send me a price if you're willing to sell.

Great! I have been contemplating doing this. Has anyone done this to a 750?

Yes. Rob Levinson. Look it up... I THINK a custom bell housing was required but I don't remember.

I have bought the conversion and the timing chain parts all that the same time so I havent broken down the cost. But I think it will be around $2000.

I love seeing all these 6 speed swaps. I sooo want to drive one for a comparison. My buddy's stock 540i6 is the same year/mileage as mine as his pulls so much harder than mine and his is bone stock. I'm going to have to start picking up all these bit pieces for the swap and start storing them in a corner. Can't wait to see the finished product 007008.

Me too, B, BMW shoulda made a manual trans an option on the 7 series, maybe as a "true" sport package upgrade or something, but at least we can fix their shortcoming.....

Just promise you'll buy a tasteful shifter instead of something that looks out of character for the e38. A nice E39 M5 knob would be sweet.

Not after 98. No facelift sticks. That is why swapping into a facelift is so much harder. The mechanics of it are fairly simple. But the electronics are tricky.
