LS1 Swappers - Check your fuel system.

A good friend of mine had just finished his S13 240sx LS1 swap and was driving home from work when the adapter fitting from the GM fuel rail to the -6AN line decided it didn't want to hold on any more.

Picture of the type of adapter.

Mine in the lower right of the shot.

Needless to say one of the best builds in the Memphis area went up in flames. Everything on that car was done by him, nothing except for machine work was farmed out... It was immaculate.

We've been working non stop in our free time to help teardown the car and move what can be saved (rear suspension, engine, transmission, headers, and 3 wheels) to a new shell.

Needless to say I went and checked my adapter fitting, while it seemed tight there was still wiggle room. I've ordered a billet fuel rail to eliminate this hazard.

Be careful with your swaps... It's hard enough seeing a good friend's car go up in flames, I can't imagine what it would be like to watch my own.

    Some pictures of the car:

Then we setup a fundraiser because he's always helped us so now we want to pay it back.

    Be safe and have fun.

What type/brand was it? Russel just came out with one that has a screw on cap that locks the line in for this very reason.

There is a big post on LS1 tech about those fittings, several people have them fail.

Russell knows about it, but won't recall them. Instead they redesigned the new ones to have a screw on retainer, but they still sell the old version as well, which is bullshit.

    Here is the new one.

Here is the fitting, that is really a new one, didn't see it on their site a few weeks ago.

    Part Numbers:
-6 AN Male to 3/8" SAE Quick-Disconnect Female with threaded retaining cap 644120 644123

Edit: Kaane beat me to it... That is some BS for sure...

    Edelbrock has one as well...

Scary. I'd donate $50 to help get his car back together, I'd be devastated if this happened to my car, so anyway I can help.

^^ that's what I'm talking about.... Should order me up a set.

I have one on my car as well, Do they usually leak, or blow off all together? The other spot that scares me is where the single bmw plastic barb exits the pump, I know you used an lines for that, but my self along with many others have just slipped rubber hose over it clamped it. Every other spot i was able to use a single clamp but not there. The fuel pressure dosent increase much with the gm reg. over stock but anything can happen.

Some leak, others like his blew.

Mine I noticed a minute leak, so I have "grounded" my car till the new bits come in... which also means possibly missing a track day this weekend.

I would really like to know what fuel line he used here, i asked him and he couldnt remember. Seems like the connection between hardlines and rubber are done very well.

That looks like the crimped fittings, and the hose could be any of the good non braded push to fit style hoes.

Looks like the filter has an on it and the 45* is an to socketless hose. The stuff is sweet, my dad did socketless for his entire fuel system in his camaro.

Those fitting have been failing people ever since they were introduced into market. There are several reports on LS1tech where these fittings came off and sprayed fuel all over the engine bay.

Your friend however, is the first time I have seen the failure lead to a fire.

If you must use quick connect type fittings, (which is inevitable if using the stock LS fuel rails and Corvette FPR), the Dorman ones are the only ones I'm aware of that are as safe as their OEM counterparts. I'm yet to hear a report of them failing. They are not pretty but they work well.

I would not trust the Russell fittings even with the new design.

They are made by Russell and they call them "Twist-lok" hose ends. They must also be used with the specific Twist lok hose

We were going to use the Russell fittings; we bought one & test-fitted it to the GM fuel rail. It would not stay on if given a gentle tug -- just popped right off. We threw it away & got the Dorman fittings.

How easy is it to weld an AN fitting to the gm fuel rail?

    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AR...8206/?rtype=10

I wonder if the ID of this fitting fit up to the rail OD, if so i might try welding one on my rail, i am decent with the tig now

I'm glad that I am using Dorman quick connects on FPR and GM OEM on fuel rail...

Nope, all there stuff is oem replacement orientated. I am thinking about upgrading my post FPR setup to all dorman. Piece of steel dorman line out of the FPR. The Dorman disconnect to there nylon line, to the fuel rail with another dorman disconnect.

I am playing with the idea of buying one of the dorman nylon line tools and making up a post FPR fuel line to sell on the forum. It wold cost about $14 in materials. They give the buyer an option of wrapping it in one of these high temp heat wraps so when it sits near the header it wont melt.

That would be cool. I wanted to do AN from the tank forward, but didn't have time, I will eventually.

That is heart breaking to see. Let’s hope the owner is able to overcome and rebuild one even better. As far as twist lock or push lock line fittings not using a lock nut, I can also report failure. I had an AN10 oil line blow apart at the block connection. I oiled down turn 8 at Willow Springs losing rear traction and exiting the track over 130mph. I was able to stop before hitting anything but the Porsche behind me did not fare as well. Summit Racing was stand up about the product and sent me all new lines and fittings of the standard braided line style. No issues since and 45 track hours on the parts.
