How to switch off "transport Mode"

Hey guys, yesterday i replaced my window regulator and in all the excitement of adjusting the window for smooth operation, i forgot to wait for the car to go into sleep mode before plugging and unplugging the battery. What resulted in is now:

no central locking (from inside too)
    wireless key does not work
    inside lights do not work
car locks and unlocks fine from the outside when the key is in the door

I've come ot the conclusion that the car is under a "transport mode" for the GM3 module. Anyone know of a way to reset the system back to normal? I left the battery disconnected all night hoping it'd reset but it didn't. Through my research i found that the only solution was to buy a replacement module from ebay and replace it. Does it need reprogramming then or can i just plug it in and go.

If anyone knows of a way to reset the system without going to the dealer or buying replacement parts please tell me as I am growing tired of fixing one thing only to break another.

Never heard of a "transport mode" and BMW wouldn't design a car that does this simply by Unplugging and plugging the battery.

Sounds more like your wireless key needs to be re-synched with the EWS.

But this is simply a "guess"

Yep, GT-1 or INPA will show if it is in transport mode, and get it out. I doubt you are in full fledged transport mode, though. Likely your GM (and probably other) module lost it's car/key settings. Again, GT-1 or INPA to the rescue.

I am fairly certain it's the GM in "transport mode". I have doubled checked everything, all the wiring is ok, my windows work from the drivers controller and as well as the door button. All fuses have been double and triple checked. However, my wireless key will not unlock the car, central lock doesn't work nor do any of the lights. I re-initialized the key with the car and the car did not respond. Therefore I am 99% sure the GM3 is fried or that the car is in the so called "transport mode" and needs to be reset by the GT-1 Tool.

Another fellow bimmerforum's solution to the exact problems i am facing:
    http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...transport+mode

However that included buying module from ebay which I'd prefer not to do. Anyone in Sacramento area own a GT1 willing to help out or can I assume bmw specialized shops will have a GT-1 or equivalent tool.

Also anyone else on the boards have a GM3 willing to part with that will work with 03 540i? PM a price

Curious are all E39s capable of Transport mode? And can simply disconectting/re-connecting a battery cause such an issue?

If so, I can see simply installing a battery before the car goes to sleep doing the same and many of us have probably installed a battery before sleep mode without such an issue before.

    Just wondering....

EDIT: SEEMS ALL BMWS COME WITH TRANSPORT MODE WHEN BEING SHIPPED FROM THE FACTORY.

Yep, I fried a GM III by not waiting for it to go into sleep mode before disconnecting the battery.... expensive lesson learned. Sometimes it can just be reprogrammed, but I wasn't so lucky.

How to switch off "transport Mode"

I'm having the same exact problem with my 2002 525i E39
I was working on the engine replacing the CCV and disconnected the battery before starting work (I always do).

When battery was reconnected, no door locks via key fob, no lights when opening doors, no central lock from inside.

All four doors lock and unlock with key in door. Gas filler door still works too. Trunk works with key fob. Wipers work.

I believe it is in transport mode.

I was curious about waiting for sleep mode before disconnecting battery?
I have never heard of sleep mode? What is that? How long do I have to wait?

Also, how hard is it to reset if I buy a GT-1 or INPA?
Any other ways to get it out of transport mode?
I tried disconnecting battery and leave it sit over night. Did not work.

    Thanks!

    Solution:

I sent the GM3 module to Scott at BMWGM5 and he fixed the module and returned it.
He changed the large capacitors on the board and probably reset it too.
Re-installed the GM3 and reconnected the battery. All is good.
All the following now work....Interior lights, key fobs, central lock.

Also I believe you have to leave the trunk open, but don't quote me on that.

Best advice from my experience, find somebody who has access to programming software and check first before going to the stealer. They will charge you an arm and a leg for a 30 minute job that requires minimal effort.

Yes, you need to open the truck or tailgate. Any change of state, any door open or close, wakes the GM back up. So 16 minutes (call it 20 to be safe) from the last movement before you disconnect the battery.

I looked all around last night with INPA and could not find a Transport mode anywhere except in the air suspension. Are you guys sure there is such a thing?

    I would suggest the following

disconnect your battery again after ~20 min
disconnect GM module ( 2 MIN under glove box )
    reconnect GM module
    reconnect battery
re-activate GM module and clean errors in INPA / DIS

    This solved my GM problem

Go to an indy or dealer and have them delete it. Takes 30 sec. Just had it done to my car last week
