Question M50 vacuum lines goes where?

Q1: Where does connector #4 connects to?

Mine is ... missing. Hose #3 just hangs in there. If my searches and readings are correct, that should be a vacuum line, right?

Q2: Out of curiosity, where is #1 connected to inside the cover? i can't imagine what's in there besides the timing chain... is it just a pressure/vacuum escape for the inside of the crankcase?

#4 connects to a hose under your intake manifold. It then goes into the intake pipe right before the throttle body. It allows the oil blowby from your crankcase to just go into the motor rather than a catch can.

#1 is the PCV valve and snaps into the valve cover. I actually don't know what the inside of where it plugs into looks like as I think there is a baffle covering it and I have never removed it.... The large hose goes to the intake as stated above. Then a small hose goes to the vaccum line off the spider hose under the intake manifold which connects to the icv.

The inside of the valve cover is just a basic separator plate to keep liquid oil from travelling down the intake.

#5 goes to a nipple on the side of the elbow that the idle control valve uses to connect to the intake manifold. Most are broken and just hang. Fixing this line helps out a lot with rough idles. #4 is simply an splice between two hose pieces, as the previous poster mentioned, connecting the valve cover with the intake tract. It allows fresh air to flow into the crankcase to prevent too much vacuum from building up in the crankcase while the engine is decelerating or other high vacuum conditions. When the motor isn't producing a ton of vacuum, such as high load conditions, there is more vacuum in the intake tract (ported vacuum) than manifold vacuum due to the venturi effect, and gases flow through the larger hose.

Fixing these two hoses corrects a lot of driveability issues people don't even realize they have

Sorry don't mean to take over your topic, but what does it mean if i find a good amount of oil in the valve cover hole where #1 plugs in? I clean it whenever i check it, and it always has oil. I also found some oil in the manifold (heard this was normal?) Found a good amount though.

Didn't want to make a new thread on a small question. Thanks!

Oil in manifold is normal as it's just blow by from the PCV. Oil in the plug hole means the plug seal that comes with the VC is leaking. I just replaced mine and no more oil in the plug holes Make sure you clean the surfaces really well before installing the new gasket and I even put a small amount of sealer on each side of the VC and plug gaskets.

Finally had time to sit down and investigate that...

I attached the new hose on the crankcase and the elbow connector (items #3 and #4 on the real oem diagram at the start of this thread)

But even with the help here, i'm still unsure where the #4 connector goes to. I believe I've found what you guys are talking about, is it this?

(anyone have the part number for that one?)

This is the only thing i have that fit's the description that is not connected somewhere else.

It goes into a connector, and then to another hose (which is broken right on the connection)... is this connector the #4? or is this something else and there's supposed to be yet another hose from #4 to that connector?

(i put that hose there 3 days ago and it's rim is already filled with oil... should i open the crankcase and replace the o-ring there?)

Real oem is no help here...

There's no information between this one and the one on the start of the thread...

The large hose in your second picture (directly under the text in red ) goes to the one outlined in red in your first. The small hose in your second picture that is held by a clip almost certainly goes to the broken one. As explained above, that one goes to the small inlet on the left of no. 9:

You do not need to remove the valve cover to replace the 'o' ring no. 2 in your first diagram.

    Question

Ok, if I did understood all the info you guys provided here... this is the fixed diagram from real oem:

[Pic also bellow in case the external is gone]

I just set up my car like this and it's seems to be fine. worse MPG at slower speeds but better mpg at higher speeds... or maybe i'm just seeing things. but please, shout if this is not correct!

now, i'm just finding it weird to have all that hot oil being pumped into my air duct right before the throttle body. I'm really curious as to the usefulness of this...

Also, the rubber hose marked "A?" is almost giving up.. what's the part number for it on my 525i's M50? ...it's missing from the realoem diagrams.

Lastly, that plastic boot will be replaced this weekend as i have the same crack as here: http://dd.jpn.org/BMW_HP/20060514/index.shtml

    Edit:
just noticed (while shopping for the o-ring for the Breather Hose Connector) that FCP sells a larger hose that probably doesn't use the connector under the intake manifold... also the connector is not L-shaped.

Last question! the car run with pretty much nothing connected to the join plug under the intake manifold (11611738165) for a long time... so unfiltered air was probably sucked right into the throttle body for several months (god knows how long by the previous owner)

...should i do something about it? or just try to forget?

ofcourse i will post pics of the throttle body interior when i replace the plastic boot

I just replaced my starter and found out how 'easy' that job it...NOT. I had to take off the intake manifold to get to the starter. While removing the hoses, I found hose #5 to be really stiff and broken in half when I tried to put it back on the underside of the intake manifold.

I also discovered that same cracked air intake boot (both sides). The car still runs find with the broken hose and the cracked boot. I will replace them anyways.

I will replace#5 tonight becauseit's not too good and I got a new one anyways.

know the part number for the missing one from realoem? the one I marked "A?" in the last drawing?
