That could be a bad connection where the fuel gage mounts to the main PCB in the cluster, a bad level sensor or a problem with the wiring to the level sensor(s). The sensors and wiring can be checked by removing the cluster and connecting an ohmmeter to the pins on the connector that go to the level sensor(s). Then pull the sensor(s), drain the gas from same and see what resistance you read with the sensor right side up and upside down. With the sensor(s) upside down the resistance should go to zero. If the resistance readings are reasonable, reflow the solder where the gage mounts to the PCB.
An early car has a single sensor on the right side of the tank, but from 9/87 there is a sensor on each side of the tank.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

same thing happens with mine, it moves around for a little and it will just go right to full, then i smack my cluster and it goes back (sometimes) so im thinking its the connection, have you tried hitting the plexy in front of the clusters?

Loose or missing ground nut on the back of your cluster.
no
Well i had the cluster out to change out the gear's on the odometer reader and and i change out the gas gauge thinking it would help it but it did not work! ... plus the nut is on the back of it thanks ...I'm thinking its the sensor in the tank i going to test it out ! Will see thanks for the info guy .
mine says its full when its empty and empty when full
i think its screwing with me
My '90iX reads 1/2 tank when it is empty. Happened again last night. Shut it off, turned the key on and the gauge read empty.
that's not a problem, it's your e30 wayving hello to you!!!
